Catholic street preachers?

I’ve just had a very entertaining conversation with a pentecostal - covered lots of areas like baptism, the gift of tongues, receiving Jesus into your life - the full nine yards!!!

I declinded their offer to visit them later as Im travelling - but there was no denying their confidence in themselves, and the confidence of their message.

It occured to me I have never ever been approached by a catholic, anywhere in the world, to talk about their faith.

Is street preaching something catholics dont do?

Glory to Jesus Christ!

When I was Catholic, a fellow parishioner and I went downtown every Friday night and walked around. We also went to stand outside strip clubs and shared the Gospel with them. I would like to start up something similar at my Orthodox parish.

I don’t think it is frowned upon within the Catholic Church. I am not sure how effective it really is. In your case with the Pentecostal you are already Christian so all you did was meet a brother/sister in Christ. ISTM that a lot of the time it just hardens people’s hearts but I guess ultimately it is the Holy Spirit which converts the heart and all these people are trying to do is proclaim the Gospel.

To your question though, I recommend you look up Frank Sheed. He was a Catholic street preacher (soap box and all). He also wrote some really great books as well.

Who do you think invented them?

St. Francis and his early followers were basically street preachers!
 
Weren’t St Dominic and his Order of Preachers a type of street preachers, too?

I know - and I wish I could have been around to hear them :cool:

I know that Brother JReducation and his friars do an awesome ministry/work outside of the abortion clinics and in the community generally and Ive seen Youtube of other friarsmministering on the street.

I was just wondering if ordinary catholics did as the guys I met were just ordinary joes.

Just an observation - its funny that when I had no interest in religion of any kind, I never saw anyone street preach, never noticed a church, never saw a religious pamphlet, newspaper etc - now Im keenly enquiring and trying to understand and develop a faith - theyre everywhere :eek: !!!

Certainly Catholics do so.

The Catholic Evidence Guild trains lay apologists to do street preaching.
 
I would have to encourage every Catholic to be "…Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. "

The unfortunate thing is that we have always had Priests and Religious and we tend to “let them handle it.” We have gotten so caught up with our lives that we forget that we have a role to play in our own priesthood. There are many Catholics that either don’t know their faith well enough or they “Think” they don’t know it well enough to speak with others about it. These people are also intimidated by “Bible-Christians” who they think know the Bible better than they do. That is totally not true since we hear from the Bible, at least 3 readings, at Mass on Sundays. Both Old and New Testement. Many “Bible-Christians” just stick with the New Testement and have no idea what is in the Old Testement other that what is quoted in the New.

I know from experience, if God is going to provide the opportunity to pass on information of our faith, the Holy Spirit will give us the words to use. We also need to use the wonderful resourses available to us to grow in the faith. Our Priests and the Church give us the basics and the resourses, it is our responsibility to take those basics and RUN WITH IT.
 
I think it’s a shame Catholics don’t go out and try to reach people more. I think fear has something to do with it. Fear of people’s reactions, not knowing as much as someone else, not being able to counter the arguments of other christians, that sort of thing. I’d love to try and promote Catholicism within my town, but I haven’t even started my RCIA yet. Patience is a virtue as I keep telling myself.

I’m not afraid to evangelize, I already tried evangelizing to my neighbors yet sometimes, I don’t know what to start.
 
Do lay Catholic men, because they do not have the sacrament of Holy Orders, have the authority of their own to be pastoral and preach in front of large crowds outside as street preachers?

I am wondering if the fact that more Protestants, who consider no difference between the general and ordained priesthoods, street preach is due to their not believing in the Catholic priesthood and apostolic succession.

The reason I ask is because I’ve had a few Protestant friends try to get me to street preach, and I’m weary that they are doing so to validate their heretical beliefs about the priesthood.
 
Of course lay people have authority to street preach. The only prohibition is that mass cannot be going on. One needs to be properly catechised and not say things contrary to church teaching, but by all means, you are definitely able.

There is a Dominican priest who does street preaching in shopping malls. He was in Portland, Oregon, where there is a Dominican parish, last Dec. He sets up in a kiosk.

He was @ the Lloyd Center in NE Portland. Holy Rosary Catholic church in NE Portland is a Dominican parish, no diocesan priests. I do not know his name. He was in the Portland area during Dec. then moved on to his next preaching assignment.
