Catholic Student Groups in the Midwest

Young Adults 18 to 35:

I thought I would put this out here for some advice. I have a 16 year old relative that lives in the Twin Cities - Minneapolis/St. Paul and he is considering going to college in a few short years to study engineering. I am wondering which state-funded institutions within a day’s drive from the Twin Cities have some good Catholic presence on campus.

Here’s a few I’ve heard positive things about:
  1. University of Minnesota in Minneapolis-St. Paul. My last visit to the Twin Cites I met two students from there and got their opinion after attending an early Mass downtown one Sunday. They liked it.
  2. University of South Dakota at Vermillion. This was mentioned on one of the EWTN shows a few years back. Some priestly vocations for one South Dakota Diocese (I think it’s the one where Swain is the Bishop) are being nourished.
  3. North Dakota State University. Read today that the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, visited there not long ago.
  4. University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Great diocese there too, but might be a little far from the Twin Cities. I’ve heard good things about the University of Kansas, which has the St. Lawrence Catholic Student Center, and the Wichita Diocese is known for orthodoxy.
  5. I think Madison, Wisconsin might have some good ones there too - I know that diocese has been blessed with an increase in vocations - with help from Bishop Merlino and priests like Fr. John Zuhlsdorf.
I’ve also been told that with the states being close together, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota give each other “tuition breaks”, in part because these states are primarily rural states, which is a plus.

I hope some college students and some graduates within the last ten years can chime in. I’m basically looking for some constructive opinions. My return to the Catholic faith was spearheaded when I returned to college in my mid-20s, and it was unexpected.
 
Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN has a very active group on campus at their Dominican-staffed Newman Center.

You should have your relative look into UW-Platteville in Platteville, WI.

For starters, it is located in the Diocese of Madison ( it’s probably like 2 hours from Madison though) and it has a Newman Center that appears to be doing quite well. 👍 (If you look up the Newman Center’s website, you will see that they are hoping to expand as their current building is too small)

Another thing that might interest your relative is that UW- Platteville is known around the area for its engineering program. 🙂

I don’t know this for certain but I do think that UW-Platteville gives tuition breaks to Minnesota.

I was in SPO in college and would highly recommend it. They are in Minnesota at U of M, St. Thomas and St. Olaf. They are also in Kansas, Ohio and NJ.
