Can anyone give some guidance. Is either :“The Cathlic Study Bible” Donald Senior, General Editor - OR- “The Catholic Bible Personal Study Edition” Jean Marie Heisberger, General Editor. Acceptable for Catholic bible studies? Are they sound?

My NAB has some very insightful commentaries, however some are a little “modern” for me. My DR is more traditional and to me a little “deeper” in thought. I don’t think it really matters, find one with extensive commentaries, and learn from them, just remember the commentaries are not Scripture, they are just someone else’s opinion, often very profound, still just a view. I recommend using different versions; you’ll get a broader view of the Scripture. You’ll also notice which have more liberal and conservative views. The biggest thing is getting to read Scripture, just make sure it’s a Catholic version and not a feel good, touchy feely, translation.

Donald Senior is one of the leading Catholic scripture scholars of our century and teaches at CTU (Chicago). He is a very intelligent man and a priest in good standing. That said, he is fairly liberal in many areas and similar to Raymond Brown along the spectrum.

Most reactionary conservatives will not like him, along with Leslie Hoppe, Lawrence Boadt and Sandra Bergant who contributed to the CSB. But those are usually the same people who take the creation accounts literally and are dismissed in the academic community as that interesting American phenomenon: Catholic-fundamentalism.

Try the series being put together by Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch. They haven’t finished doing commentary for the whole bible as of yet, but what I’ve read thus far has been very informative.
