In the 70’s I was in my 20s. I didn’t have a credit card by choice, tho I eventually had a gas card and a store card, but had no problem with having my own bank account, renting an apartment, buying a car, and buying a house - all on my own. While still in my 20s. My dad would have co-signed for me, but he didn’t have to.

Where are you getting all this strange information???
From CNN.

A company in the 1970’s told my mom that they wouldn’t sell car insurance to divorced women because they might run their ex-husbands over.

But that was an insurance company that was enabled by a government with no real anti discrimination protections for women. The Pope didn’t do it. The church didn’t do it. And let’s face it, the idea of a priest telling a battered woman with a small child (my brother, I sure as heck wasn’t alive in the 70’s!:p) that she should not be allowed to insure her car so that she can go to work and support her son is laughable.

To the OP: let’s take your hysterical anger one topic at a time and try to avoid blaming people and institutions indiscriminately.
I’m not blaming the Church and I am not the OP, but I am pointing out it isn’t a bad thing that the rate of marriages have declined and women don’t have to marry solely for economic reasons. I’m not sure why the Church doesn’t agree with it. Would it prefer people in unhappy marriages?

I don’t know anything about CNN - no TV - but based on what you’re saying, I wouldn’t trust CNN!

You’re getting a lot of first-hand accounts here about life for women - both single & married - in the 60s & 70s. It doesn’t jibe with what you’ve been learning from television. Maybe you should stop watching - or at least stop believing everything you see.

Can you cite any Church teaching that women are better off marrying only for money? Not just random people, but actual Church teaching.

I have seen in this forum, the often repeated opinion that if it were not for feminists than marriage would not be in trouble right now. The reasoning was ever since women gained financial independence than they had the choice to either not get married or if married not stay in unhappy marriages. In short, if women were limited to the choice of either getting married or starving, than marriage would not be in trouble.

This is not Church teaching of course, but it seems to a popular opinion here especially among some of the men.

CNN isn’t going to tell you about men being refused typing tests.

And that, I believe, is how anti-Catholics are made. “A Catholic told me x (or I read it on CA) so it must be Catholic teaching!”

Of course, some people will get the wrong end of the stick no matter how carefully you separate opinion from fact. When I was writing a food column for the local paper, I once wrote very clearly that I was not a mushroom expert, so I always bought mine from the store. I got a call the next week: “Since you’re an expert, could you tell me how to identify poisonous mushrooms?”

All the tech nerds are the ones that get married first as long as they have good jobs. These are the types who aren’t getting married. businessinsider.com/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8 Either that or men in their 30s with no decent job.

Believe me… I’ve dated and met some of these guys. It isn’t such a bad thing if they never marry at all in my opinion. Most women are looking for a spouse, not a child.

I have a condo that I purchased myself. I’m assuming that I couldn’t do that in the 1960s.

If he wouldn’t, he wouldn’t be obsessed with why young people aren’t marrying. I can give him a long survey of why I am not married. Do I have to detail every bad boyfriend that I’ve ever had to the man?
I know a woman raised by her mother in the 1940s. Her mother owned her own home, car, boat, and business. Yes, it could be done.

The Pope is not concerned that young people aren’t marrying, per se. He is concerned that they are choosing to live together without the benefit of marriage. There is a big difference.

There are quite a few shy young men with average looks and steady jobs who do not find it any piece of cake to find a wife. It works both ways, as it turns out.

As a recently confirmed Catholic (and a woman), I am frequently accused that the Church demeans women.
If the Catholic Church really demeans women then it will not have any reverence and devotion to the Blessed Mother who is a woman.

And rank misogyny alert within CAF… forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=958624

Yes… This is exactly what I am talking about… Using the idea of complementarity to suggest that ladies shouldn’t have high ranking roles in the Church.

I’m not interested what Catholic teachings are. I am interested about how Catholic teachings are abused by men looking for an excuse to be sexist or blame women for all their ills.

This the Catholic Church loves Mary so it isn’t sexist argument is getting old. Why are there so many men who purport to love Mary but don’t show the same respect for women and women’s equality?

The thread is about what Catholic teachings are. If you are interested in something else, you might want to start a new thread.

There are roles that are filled by the clergy rather than laypersons that women cannot fill because it is impossible to ordain women. I do get disturbed at the degree to which the women’s movement is used as an excuse to grasp for authority that the laity does not want the episcopacy to keep because the laity covets the power given to the bishops. This is nothing other than another Protestant movement, whatever is meant by it.

This is a fair point. After all, a man may not move a finger without permission from his own mother and yet treat every other woman in his life like dirt. Likewise, it does not immediately follow that a person who seems to venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary will necessarily recognize the dignity of other women. We don’t always learn just because we sit at the feet of all the right teachers.

The truth is, however, the Church has had a greater hand in defending the dignity and rights of women over the ages than any other body. It is the Church who defended women from forced marriages, for instance.
