Hey fellow brothers and sisters in Christ,

I was wondering if I could receive some tips on how a Catholic teenager should live his life. Some things about myself right now which I feel the need to get rid of:
  1. I binge on social media, usually during the holidays as I give the excuse that it’s the holidays and I deserve to relax
  2. I don’t read the Bible or readings of the Saints that often
  3. I don’t pray many prayers or devotions, in my daily routine it’s usually just my morning prayers, daily rosary, a few Hail Marys for certain intentions, and sometimes my evening prayers (which I very often omit - bad habit) adding to that, I only pray certain devotions when there is a need to (e.g July is Our Lady of Mount Carmel - no obligation to pray but its better to) otherwise I don’t usually go the extra mile
So yeah, I’m wanting to improve my lifestyle as a Catholic teen but everyday I keep falling back into these slothful actions. Looking forward to hearing your advice 🙂 Thank you and God bless

Morning prayers and a rosary every day are a very good start … don’t be so hard on yourself … reading the Bible would be the next step I would suggest … being you are having issues with your evening prayers, I would suggest reading a passage from the New Testament in the evening, and then reflecting on it with a prayer to our Lord … a great way to end the day.

  • Establish your routines, disciplines, and schedule with regard to your spiritual, mental, and physical fitness (e.g. every day 6 AM prayers, 6:30 exercise, 7 AM reading, etc.)
  • Practice how to run a household and habits of chores: cleaning, cooking, dishes, keeping things organized, laundry, yard work, etc.
  • Serve your Church and married couples (hopefully this includes your parents). You have been given freedom to be used in service of God through service of others. In addition to giving God your time, give your time to others as well.
  • Practice friendship which is where you will experience unselfish love.
Your future vocation will depend on all these things 🙂

You are doing pretty good for a teen! Don’t be too hard on yourself.

The fact that you are avoiding sin & sinful situations is a big accomplishment in itself. A lot of teens say no prayers and are involved with computer porn and dabbling in drugs with their friends.
Make sure you always say your prayers before bedtime & ask God to forgive you of any sins you may have committed during the day.
Also, read a few bible verses every day to increase your knowledge of God. 👍

Start great new spiritual things and stay with them. After a while you will have formed a habit ! As time goes on you can increase prayer and spiritual reading. Good recreation is important also!

It will change your life and the way you see things.

You seem to be doing pretty well. That daily rosary is awesome, I was in my forties before I added that to my day!

I wish I had when I was a teen.

I am currently reading a novel based on Pier Giorgio Frassati, “To the Heights”.It’s a pretty good read. He was a very active teen and young adult. He joined nearly every ‘club’ open to him at his school and parish. But, it didn’t stop there, he was also into outdoor sports, but the Catholicism went with him! I’m not saying you should join every club, but maybe one or two that are geared towards our Catholic Faith, such as the Pro-life ministry or the music ministry at your parish. Join a school club that you’re natural talents speak to and bring your faith with you, you don’t always have to talk about it, but by living it you are incorporating it into what ever you do.

When or if you start dating, I suggest going to the vigil Mass before your Saturday night date. I did that as a young adult with my now husband and it set a good tone for our dating/engagement. I wish I had done this more as a teen! Looking back I believe many if not all of the young men I dated probably would have enjoyed attending with me.

You are pretty good at formal prayer, and people have suggested adding more. I suggest that you incorporate informal prayer in talking with God throughout your day. Speak to him like he’s someone in your family that you love the most. I also suggest getting familiar with your Guardian Angel, and you can be very informal with him, but still be respectful. 🙂 He’s known you from before you were born and he prays for you and wants you to do well in this life!

God Bless you ResoluteSheep and God be with you.

OP,

I can only assume that you are currently enrolled in some type of schooling correct?

I am currently dealing with the same type of thing, and I am almost confident I know why. IT’S SCHOOL! I am not saying that this is a good excuse, but with the end of the school year wrapping up, things tend t get a little more difficult and stressful. We start to lose focus on school, and procrastinate on homework, which leaves little time for prayer during the day.

I really recommend this video by Father Mike
youtube.com/watch?v=juN6sG_esjU

He gives great examples on how to pray unceasingly, and it really doesn’t take much.
