I was wondering why we do not hear more about Carmelite spirituality? The best talks I have ever heard were given by Carmelites or on Carmelite spirituality. I personally think that the 3 Carmelite Doctors of the church have the greatest teaching out their and I think everyone even non-catholic listener would benefit from hearing it.

There are not very many Carmelite religious and most tend to withdraw from activity to a life of solitary prayer, the nuns more than the friars. There are, however, many lay people involved in the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites and the Third Order Carmelites, so I suggest you see if there is a group near you. These groups study and practice Carmelite spirituality. A quick internet search should give a lot of good leads.

The friars OCD or OCarm do not live solitary lives, they live active completive lives in community with others Friars. the sisters do tend to live in cloister, but not all. I know more OCarm than I do OCD and they are some of the hardest working Priest and Brother I know. They are out in the Parishes, retreat center, spiritual director, teachers and missions. I for one would Like to hear more on the teaching of John of the Cross, Teresa of Jesus and Therese of the little child Jesus. I also think other catholics would get alot out of it esp from Therese

There is much in print about Carmelite spirituality. There is also a great deal on the internet. Do a google search you might be amazed. I would suggest you educate yourself and then you can inform others about Carmelite spirituality. I am glad to see people are interested. We are contemplative, third order carmelites live in the world but are not of the world. We try to show by our example what is means to be Carmelite. We are devoted to Jesus and His Mother as she shows us the way to Him.

Denise,

It would be nice to get a Carmelite to go on TV or radio and go into the deeps of Carmelite Spirituality. I think many people would be interested and you probably could get some Catholic Radio networks and maybe EWTN to go along if a good speaker is willing.
