People often leave out pertinant details in their stories or only give facts that make themselves look good. I am not saying that the person’s mother is a liar, only that if you knew the actual facts behind the excommunication there would probably be more fault on her side. For all we know, her relationship with her new fiance might have started with an adulterous affair! I am not judging her, only saying that there is probably more behind the real story then you can learn from the son.
The only thing that you can do is show them the sections in the Cathecism that pertain to the subject. The son isn’t going to have any idea what percipated the exommunication. He is only going by what his mom told him.
