Hello All!

I have an internet friend saying she wants to go to the church of Scientology. She says that she can do so & still be Catholic at the same time, but, she wants to explore around more. I asked her where she heard this, she said tv…but, (SURPRISE!) not on EWTN or anything like that.

Help me out. Are there articles on this site about such things and why Scientology is wrong (it’s a cult, isn’t it) and NOT in sync with the Catholic Church?

I hope she is rich. The scientologists will help divert her cash flow. Why is she interested in going to a religion which was originated by a science fiction writer?

If not, does anyone have info on them.

Do either one of these groups use the Bible and/or accept Christ?

The Church of Christ, Scientist (aka “Christian Science”) is NOT synonymous with the Church of Scientology. Christian Science was established by Mary Baker Eddy in the late 1800’s. It is a loose blend of superficial Christianity rooted in metaphysics. Sorry: I am NOT particularly well-informed about the details of Christian Science but I know that they deem all illness and injury to be simply an illusion. If one can learn to put on the ‘mind of Christ’ one will cease to be ill, impoverished, etcetera. Christian Scientists often decline to see medical doctors but instead are treated for their illnesses by Christian Science ‘practitioners’ who teach them how to overcome the illusions which make them believe that they are sick, blind, deaf, or that they have just severed a gushing artery. (Sorry–an attempt at humor there, lol). The doctrine has much in common with modern Word of Faith teachers. The main publication of the Church of Christ, Scientist, is the Christian Science Monitor, which frankly is a doggoned good newspaper though a tad liberal for my taste.

Scientology was developed by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1940’s and 1950’s and is supposed to be a new science of mental health which displaces psychology and psychiatry. So Scientology is a substitute for those sorts of mental health practitioners. It does not profess to be derived from Christianity, though it sometimes claims that it is wholly compatible with any religious view. Scientologists actively despise psychiatry by the way and often run radio broadcasts ‘exposing’ them as quacks. Most fees and services in the Church of Scientology are exhorbitantly expensive and often the adherent ends up deeply indebted to the Church, making it difficult to leave. The Church of Scientology can be quite aggressive in using the court system to ‘punish’ critics, especially former members of the group. They have a couple of programs designed to help people overcome addictions–reportedly they have sometimes received government funds for these programs though independent research usually shows that the programs aren’t especially effective. This is pretty much what I know. Anyone else have more info?
 
I know it’s a simplistic answer but if half of the people in Hollywood are involved with it, you know it can’t be anything good.
