Catholics have you had people/family offline mistreat you or try to ruin your life because you're catholic?

I live in New Jersey and I can’t even count the times that I have been insulted for being a Catholic. Most of the comments I heard were “you’re too smart to be a Catholic” or “I thought you’d have more sense than to be a Catholic.” There is a very vocal anti-theist population here. It’s disgusting.

Not discernibly. The thing is, the people I’ve had problems with over faith have pretty much all been people who were just…the kind of people who cause problems. I got the feeling it had less to do with faith and more to do with some people just being jerks.

My daughter’s mother in law is a widowed, non-practicing Presbyterian, although she sent my son-in-law to an Anglican school when he was a boy. She is vocal about Catholics, especially Irish Catholics, being “drunken bums.” We don’t have much to do with her.

It’s so unfair, too. We are not bums! We pay good money for our booze! 🤣

Me, too. You’re right; it’s a tough place to be Catholic. People feel quite entitled to make rude comments. OTOH, it’s also the place where a faithful Catholic reached out to me and started me on the path to conversion to the Catholic Church. So, there is good and bad in terms of acceptance of the faith 😉

Never been “mistreated” or had someone try to ruin my life. Just nasty comments and general ignorance. Which I find occurs almost everywhere about countless topics. It doesn’t dictate my actions or thoughts…

My father was quite negative about religion in general. He gave up going to church at all. We used to joke about it among ourselves: My sister used to say, “Dad’s church is on 55th street. He keeps all his money there.” Of course she meant his God was his money. He used to think going to church was a crutch for weaklings. His attitude was less than amicable when he would talk to me about it.

He died in 1996, and I hope all is well with him.
