A quick question:

I am assuming:

Anyone who knowingly rejects the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception holds a heretical position.
Anyone holding a heretical position is a heretic.
The Orthodox Church rejects the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception.

Does this mean that the Orthodox Church is a bunch of heretics?
Or where did I go wrong?

I am unfamiliar with the Orthodox churches teaching(s) on contraception, so I will not address whether you accurately describe the positio they hold (and remember, there is not one Orthodox Church but many Orthodox churches, each independent of the other).

Regarding heresy…Where did you go wrong?

By using the term “anyone”. It is not accurate.

One can only be a heretic if one embraced a particular faith and then began to hold doctrinal error obstinately.

In other words, only a Catholic can be a heretic.

Those born into the schismatic or heretical faiths are not formal heretics-- their state of conscience is called bona fides. See also the Catechism paragraph 818.

Thank you very much. I like the description.

Another question, then. What of someone who converts to the Orthodox Faith from Catholicism?

Then canon law would apply regarding a Catholic who formally leave the faith.

CCC paragraph 817-818 said:
817 In fact, “in this one and only Church of God from its very beginnings there arose certain rifts, which the Apostle strongly censures as damnable. But in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions appeared and large communities became separated from full communion with the Catholic Church—for which, often enough, men of both sides were to blame.” The ruptures that wound the unity of Christ’s Body—here we must distinguish heresy, apostasy, and schism—do not occur without human sin: Where there are sins, there are also divisions, schisms, heresies, and disputes. Where there is virtue, however, there also are harmony and unity, from which arise the one heart and one soul of all believers.

818 “However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers . . . . All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church.”

819 “Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth” are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: “the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.” Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him, and are in themselves calls to “Catholic unity.”

If you are born into, the Lutheran Faith, Methodist Faith, Anglican Faith, Orthodox Faith, or any NON-Catholic Faith you are NOT a heretic; nor can you be called a heretic. If you never in your life were a Catholic then you never can be a heretic of the Catholic Church.

Moving on:
CCC paragraph 2089:
2089 Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. “Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”

In light of paragraph 818-819 someone can only be charged with Heresy if he/she is Catholic and they deny some truth that must be believed or have obstinate doubt concerning a truth they must believe.

I hope this helps!

Thank You, Adam for the link. I listened to Fr.'s talk. It was very inspiring to hear an Orhtodox Priest speak out so strongly against contraception. It was good to hear him say we Catholics and Orthodox are on the same page in this issue. I will pass on the link to my Cahtolic friends.👍

The way I have heard it described on Catholic Answers is that Protestants and the like are material heretics as opposed to formal heretics. They believe what they believe because they were brought up to believe it.

Apostasy would be leaving the Catholic Church for another.

The Byzantines avoid explicite statements and it is their wisdom, because to teach something rigorously without ratification would have been risky. We are united by Eucharist and whatever we teach is just what we teach. Our teacher, of us all, is Christ, one, same and really present.

As for the actual teaching, I think we all condemn such things and share love for chastity. It seems that their methods of presenting the teaching are different. What I admire is the Vatican’s courage to teach such hard things to people openly. Yes, some may leave the Church, but better a small number of faithful than a large number of crooked.

Now, finally, I see the process in factors: as the temptation grows so must the power of instruction, but not too much lest all collapse. It is better to think a venial is capital sin and avoid it than to know it is jst venial and eagerly commit it. Anyway, both ‘lungs’, following Jesus, call us to be perfect, so whatever they teach about sins must not be our business.
