In the last six months, I have been conversing with family, friends and co-workers about voting for politicians that do not support abortion and, for the most part, money wins out - meaning voting for the person who will make the money for them. Today, though, and it makes my heart hurt to say this, two very close conservative catholic friends of mine both stated that they believed in a woman’s right to chose. It makes me so sad that catholics are saying this and that “we need to concentrate on our job situation and supporting out families.” Normally, I avoid controversy, especially in light of the fact that I’m not very knowledgeable about politics and/or quoting the bible, but I can feel God’s hand prodding me to open my mouth. Has anyone else experienced the above? Thank you.

Yes, it’s frustrating. They are busy storing up treasures on earth… at the expense of helpless babies. Very sad indeed.

Pope John Paul’s II says “Do not be afraid” in the book Crossing the Threshold of Hope. Don’t be afraid to share your faith and to correct someone with the Truth, sometimes we will find that people just need to be reminded of what’s right and what’s wrong. 🙂

Have you provided them with copies of Voting Guide for Serious Catholics from Catholic Answers? It’s a well written explanation of Catholic teachings on 5 non-negotiable issues. My dh & I bought several hundred and (with pastor’s permission) put them in the back of the church. I think it is a wonderful and easily read pamphlet ( and cheap, too!).

Peace,
Linda

kaos,
Praise God that he is prodding you to open your mouth. It is a life or death situation for unborn babies and it can be a life or death situation for a persons immortal soul. You are doing the Lord’s work.

The American Life League is a wonderful Catholic Pro Life organization with a lot of information on the web site and magazine. www.all.org. Bless you.

If I had to guess, these people have rationalized and convinced them that it’s OK because they have married themselves to a party affiliation and cannot accept the idea that the platform of that party is out of moral bounds.

This leads to a political discussion, because they will throw out the Iraq war and the death penalty and a lot of other stuff to make themselves feel like each party is just as bad.

It’s too bad. Many very otherwise traditional people fall into this, including many of my relatives, who by every other measure appear to be good solid Christians. It’s a tough nut to crack. I have had no success.

I think we all have experienced this to some degree, and I believe we all have an obligation to stand up for the truth especially when so many lives are at stake. You didn’t mention who these individauls were planning on voting for but I will assume that it was the pro-choice candidate. The easiest thing to do is to point out the obvious inconsistencies with the pro-choice argument. If these people are truly conservative they would probably tell you that they are personally opposed to abortion but don’t feel that we have a right to impose our beliefs on others. The question that they would then need to answer is why are they opposed to abortion. The only reason to oppose it at all is if you believe its murder, and if you believe its murder then how can they support anothers “right” to murder their children. That would also mean that we would need to take the law against murder off the books entirely. If they dont see it as murder then they have no reason to oppose it in the first place because then its nothing more than a simple medical procedure.
