Catholics vs Mormons vs Protestants on the "Gates of Hell"

I have noticed that in arguments between Catholics and Mormons on apostolic succession, sooner or later the Catholic will bring up the “gates of hell” prophecy, “Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”

This scripture seems to be the cornerstone to the Catholic belief that there would never be an apostasy of the Catholic church.

No doubt about it, now that he’s encountered some knowledgeable former Mormons who know at least as much about it as he does.
