Catholics vs. Protestant vs. Mormons

Hello,

I am technically “protestant” (seeking out catholic church slowly I think) – until now, I had always assumed that being protestant was “normal”, that being catholic was very “fancy/traditional” and a little different/not the “norm” – and that (PLEASE don’t take offense to this) – that being mormon was a little strange (putting it nicely).

I am slowly slowly slowly realizing (I think), that the catholic church may be the right place for me to be.

question is – just out of curiousity – do most catholics feel that protestants are kind of strange, in the same way that some protestants look at LDS?

HMMMNNNN. No, most Protestants just don’t have the extra graces and sacramentality that Catholics have. I respect any religion that has respect for the 2000 years of tradition,

I was raised nominally Catholic but joined a Protestant church after I got married to a non-religious husband. No, I don’t recall any Catholics saying the Protestants were odd. But, boy, did the Methodists have a lot of misinformation about Catholics!! There was still enough Catholic catechism in my bones to make me “defend the faith” in many Bible study classes, but they were really not open AT ALL to seeing the Catholic point of view.

I think every faith has aspects to admire and aspects that ary ‘funky’ and we selectively choose what to focus on and emphasize.

I was a protestant, in one form or another, for 50 years; raised that way, etc. I always looked at The Catholic Church as extraordinary, very beautiful and completely incomprehensible.
I have been a happy, practicing Catholic for 13 years now and look back at protestantism as lukewarm Christiananity. Had it been anything other, I know I would have never have lived the life I did and would had respect for God and myself.
But did I think it odd? No.
As a former protestant and now a Catholic, I have always found mormonism to be a complete fairy tale and wonder how any intellegent and thinking person could believe the convoluted stories that make up that “religion”. That said, some of the nicest people I have ever known have been mormons.

I try to stay away from broad generalizations of individuals that belong to separate faiths or churches, etc. However, in that you are considering the Catholic Church, some of the greatest things to read is anything by John Paul II. Read the lives of the Saints. Focus on an understanding of the Eucharist; in this alone you can spend a lifetime studying. Good luck in your continued study and may God bless you on your path.

So what is it that is drawing you to the Catholic faith?

As a cradle Catholic, I never remember at all thinking, hearing, or being taught that protestant religions or even Mormonism as being “strange” or “off.” I seem to remember coming to the conclusion that everyone worships in their own way and that some people are more comfortable in other churches. Now whether that is because they are scared about some aspects of Catholic teachings, or because they simply don’t agree, or because they don’t understand, no one can say for sure. But it would be hard to say that Protestants and Mormons would be better off with no religion at all than with the one that they have.
That being said, I have recently been very surprised about what other protestant churches seem to be teaching about Catholicism. I have a friend who is new to my area and was looking for a church to go to on Sunday. I informed her of the many churches in the area and included my Catholic church on the list and offered to take her there. She replied that she was looking for a more non-denominational church, and she said, and I quote, “Jesus is the only true way to salvation and I don’t agree with Catholics who say that Mary is their salvation,” and walked off
My jaw nearly hit the ground . I had no idea that misconceptions like that circulated even in well educated and informed circles.

There are some very nasty Catholic versus Protestant and vice versa, threads in the Non-Catholic Forums on this website, of which it would be wise to stay clear of because it leaves the impression that Catholics in general, are bigoted, unforgiving religious self-righteous people thinking only about Protestant religions. This is not the case.
I think it is safe to say, according to my experience, that we Catholics, amongst ourselves do not discuss Protestants or other faith systems as such, unless we discuss a particular recent incident that happened to one of us in the Church. This does not happen often because it is considered bad taste to do so.
We experience and tolerate a degree of prejudice from known protestant individuals, living amongst us simply because we understand that the cause of their prejudice results from indoctrination, lack of knowledge and understanding. Love your neighbour without asking denominational questions is part of being a Catholic, at least in my home town.
It is great to be Catholic and I hope that you will find a warm spot in the Church where you may gro to your full potential in Christ.
