Where are the souls of the people that lived before Jesus came or that live(d) in places where the Gospels haven’t been told? In heaven, purgatory or hell?

I don’t think we can assume they are all in the same place.

I’ll leave it to someone more educated to answer fully, but my personal belief is that circumstances are not what determines whether someone is saved or not… it’s ultimately between an individual and God. If my logic is right, another way to say this is that nobody is predestened to hell. It seems to me that God gives us all what we need to love him back… and we don’t always need to understand what we’re doing.

Jesus descended into the place where all the souls who died before He came dwelled. They all got the opportunity to recieve the Gospel or reject it. I believe for the most part they began the process of purgation and a few went immediately to heaven. When Christ died and when He rose there were reports of people walking around Jerusalem who were said to have come out of the grave.

we can see from the story of the rich man and lazarus, and from hebrews 11, that people who were born before Christ, or never heard the gospel, go to either a place of punishment or a place of comfort (torment or abraham’s bosom), we would think waiting for their future assignment.

this thinking aligns with the teaching from revelation that death and hell are emptied, and thrown into the lake of fire, along with satan and his followers, and any humans whose names are not found in the book of life.

the verses in peter concerning ‘spirits in prison’ seem to point to the idea that Christ, after He died and before He was resurrected, went and preached salvation to the souls who had been born before His life brought salvation to the world.

so they, along with us, have the opportunity of receiving salvation from the work of Christ on the cross.

as far as the predestination issue, we catholics believe in predestination (it’s biblical, after all), but not DOUBLE predestination - that anyone is predestined for hell.
