May I ask what doesn’t sit right? Is this a belief a lot of Catholics share or is it just your personal opinion?

Please, I am curious to know what is it about Missionaries that doesn’t sit right?
I think that is his personal opinion jpete. I won’t speak for him, but as for me and the Catholics I know, there is nothing wrong with missionaries.

I don’t agree with some tactics that some missionaries use, but overall they are a good thing.

Hi jpete. I too appreciate your love for our Lord Jesus Christ, and am happy to talk to a fellow Christian.

I think, though that we have highjacked the OP’s thread, so I’d like to start a new one to answer your points.

Please go here. Talk to you there. 🙂

Once again, Della ascends the mountain of excellent spreading of the Good News and succinctly and with Christian charity addresses a plethora of distinct but related issues. I can hear the Church Triumvant cheering and giving high five’s.

I’m struck by the fact that I’ve posted on a thread that criticizes the Church because the poster mistakenly thinks that the Church teaches that only Catholics go to Heaven to another that criticizes the Church because it teaches that God’s plan of salvation is for all, not just those who are born again via a Christian faith.

Nondenom we can discuss this in the other thread, yet division should sadden anyone, that was what I was addressing the evil of division that some people spread. Not the spreading of our love of Jesus Christ.

Back on topic,

I will assume you then concede that you misunderstand Catholic belief and should re-examine it as you have attacked what we do not believe. Or in other words are mis-representing Catholic belief.

It seems to be explained much better here on this thread by some of the Catholics, if you have any questions feel free to post, I invite you to have an open heart to what Catholics really believe.

If you have any specific questions that are off topic feel free to PM me.

God Bless

How kind you are. But, any words of mine that are any good are simply a restating of Catholic teaching as I understand it. 😉

Yes, it is ironic, which is why we Catholics ought to know what the CCC teaches instead of winging it. Yes?

I’m sure many Catholics don’t feel that way. I am most likely in the vast minority. Really it’s my own personal opinion, so none of my statements should reflect the Church or its members as a whole.

My problem with them probably stems from some of my high school friends who loved to relate their own mission work and their “miracle” stories. To me, it smacks of self-righteous egotism to go to someone else’s country and tell them what to believe. Even if we do believe we are right and that we should proclaim our faith, I feel it appears high-handed and condescending to do so in that way.

I am a firm believer of teaching by example. Those people who help with the poorer countries’ living conditions and, through example, show their faith are the kinds of people I would like to see.

I don’t doubt those kinds of missions do exist. While I am a staunch Catholic, I do respect people’s opinions about religion and recognize that not everyone believes what I believe.

Yes we should know what the CCC teaches. But for clarification, it was non-Catholics who misrepresented the Church’s teachings on whether salvation was only for Catholics in one thread and another which stated that salvation was the exclusive opportunity for those who are Christians in this life.

While a number of Catholics have incomplete understanding of the Catholic Teachings, myself included, the point I was trying to make how non-Catholics (sometimes even the same person)criticize the Church on both sides of the salvation question

I’m reminded of G. K. Chesterton’s question in Orthodoxy. If you meet people who try to describe someone, and everyone has a different description (to include wholly contradictory ones), doesn’t it stand to reason that none of the witnesses really saw what they claim?

So to with the Church. Every used-to-be Catholic and garden variety anti-Catholic has a myriad conflicting tall tales about what the Church does, has done, will do, teaches, et cetera; yet, despite all the glaring contradictions within their own testimonies, it still must be the Catholics who don’t understand our own faith.

How silly.
