Hello,

My question is strictly administrative in nature and has nothing to do with the manner in which a child is being taught Catholicism. Obviously keeping a child in faith formation is primary but this is a hypothetical.

If a child has just received 1st Communion and Reconciliation and does not enroll in CCD for 3rd/4th or 5th grade(any or all)…when the child is later enrolled, do they jump right back on with the grade in which they are in elementary school?

If there is someone that has been involved in CCD registration in the past this question is for you!

Thank you!

I’m not in CCD registration, but my kids (when we decide to re-enroll them) will jump right back in.

Did you ever get any sort of verification the program wouldn’t give you a problem since the child was in and out?

This is very much a local decision on how it would be handled. There is no monolithic religious education directive that covers how things are done, worldwide, by province, or even by diocese. It’s a parish level decision, and even a child level decision.

As the religious ed coordinator for my parish, I’d look at the individual kid. Were they getting home based instruction? No instruction? What do they know? I’ve done different things, depending on the family situation. I’ve put them in with their class level and given at-home catch up curriculum that they do with their parents. I’ve put kids in a mixed grade class to catch up. I’ve had a teacher do a one-on-one class with the child and then put them in with their peers later.

It just depends on the child and their situation. My focus is on what is best for that child.

No, but I’ve seen in before. Many of the kids “opt out” of CCD as the parents don’t like the program being used and sometimes come back here an there. The last time we were in it the program only had about 20ish kids in it (which was basically the 1st communion class). At my wife’s parish everyone from K-6 does the same lesson. We were looking at switching parishes to one with strictly classroom CCD and they told us the kids would go with their grade.
