It’s that time again, the kids are back in school and RE starts back up again? Is anyone else teaching? What grade? What class?

God bless you all, especially the 3 people who literally walked in the door yesterday for our catechist meeting and volunteered to fill empty positions. They will begin in Kinder and PRe-K an excellent training ground (and hopefully because their own children are young, will be around for a long time as their children go through the program).

8 catechists will be receiving 10 year service awards from the bishop at our annual convocation, who all started in Kinder with their own kids and are now teaching HS and Jr HIgh for us.

They love it and plan to continue even when their own kids are out and in college–and some of their kids have also been catechists after their own confirmations.

I think I’m doing Grade 9 this year (I have yet to hear back; they will call after the long weekend) and I am also doing Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion - and I have three Youth Groups this year, as well. 🙂

I’m teaching RCIA for children. I’ll have 2nd-6th graders. I’m really excited, it should be fun. Although I’m a bit overwhelmed! I’m sorting through everything and there is A LOT to cover preparing for three Sacraments and Easter and probably a fourth afterwords! 😃 But it will be fun! 😃

My wife and I will be taking on the 7-8th grade class this year. It’s a first for us, but we’re both very excited about the challenge and reward of sharing our faith!

say a prayer, I have a couple of “possibles” for Confiramation I, experienced, very sound, would work well together, let the Holy Spirit move in them and may they respond. Over the weekend Kinder and Pre-K settled itself and we are covered. now I need more catechists for the Spanish classes, always the hardest to fill.

After 4 years of 5th grade - I am moving up to 6th grade. The cool thing is, my kids don’t yet know I am following them as they move to the next grade 😃

High School Youth Group-we’ll be using “Theology of the Body for Teens” and Confirmation class for high school Juniors.

This year I’ll be teaching 6th grade (Old Testament). I have taught 9th grade (3 years) and third grade (1 year). I love teaching. Last year I taught my third graders (who were preparing for First Holy Communion) “The Big Picture” of salvation history. I felt it was crucial that they know WHO Jesus is, why we needed a savior in the first place, how he was prefigured in the OT, what the “Passover” was and how it was the foreshadowing of the Last Supper and eucharist, etc. The DRE was adamant: “Just teach parts of the mass!!!” I argued that the parts of the mass don’t mean much if you don’t know why we have mass in the first place. No one thought third graders could handle “the big picture,” but they certainly could. Those kids GOT IT. When they received their First Holy Communion, they KNEW that it was the fufillment of the Jewish Passover, they KNEW Jesus was the “lamb,” they KNEW that what they were doing was part of the ongoing mystery of the sacrifice at Calvary. The other 3rd grade class (which my daughter was in) instead colored pictures of the Easter bunny and eggs, Santa, elves, lepruchans, etc. I felt very good about giving those kids everything I had. I used the “Faith and Life” series by Ignatius Press to shape my lessons, since we didn’t have texts to use.

Since I seemed so intent that the kids know “The Big Picture,” the DRE felt I would be “perfect” for teaching the OT to 6th grade. Most teachers don’t know much about the OT anyway, she said. I agreed to take it on. I am actually looking forward to it. I just wish that I could two years in the same grade, since I spend hours preparing lessons and activities each week. It would be great to be able to use the stuff the next year, too! It’s like reinventing the wheel every year. Anyway- may the Holy Spirit be with all of us cathechists this year as we strive to pass on our Holy Catholic faith to a generation so very much in need of God!!! Judie

I will be teaching adults. I have taught kids in the past but I am better at teaching adults. I also am working with parents preparing their children for First Communion and Baptism.

a most critical catechetical ministry, more important and with more lasting effect even that what we teach the children.

I’m teaching 3rd grade again this year. It’ll be my fourth year. We have our first class tomorrow night! I’m excited/nervous, like always! 😃

This will be my second year teaching fifth grade, which in our program is Sacraments.

My first year they asked me “Do you want to do fourth grade, The Ten Commandments, or Fifth Grade Sacraments?” Sacraments won, hands down.

They were glad to have me too; I’m a twenty year old male, I think the only male teacher on staff, so I’m the “positive male role model” 😊

I willl be teaching 9th grade for the third year. I am a bit aprehensive. The first year I taught that grade I had a great bunch of kids. Last year, out of 15, only two were attending Mass and I think I only had one girl who ever came to two classes in a row. It was very hard to build on anything from week to week. Each lesson had to be self contained “nuggets” of information. I love the depth of the material available for HS!

What material in particular do you like? I am looking for something to do with my kids once they get into high school. Thanks!

First time 6th Grade (assistant actually) here. We are using the “We Believe” series so it’s Old Testament this year. I’m the only young male teacher (can 35 still be young? Please?) I wanted to do that assistant thing first to humbly defer to others who have more experience than I and learn from them. There is a pretty good 6th grade topic that has been around for a few years that I just enjoyed reading and getting great ideas from.

Yea! We start class on Sunday! 😃 I’m excited although my head is spinning right now. Trying to coordinate with both the DRE and the lady in charge of RCIA is rather interesting, but it will be good. 😃

Prayers for everyone! :signofcross:
