I have recently accepted the DRE position at our church. This is a volunteer position. We are a small parish with @ 300 families and @ 100 children in the program (Grades 1-8).
Our pastor would like me to create a cirriculum that is not a “book to color & draw” program. I have read Christian LeBlanc “The Bible tells Me So” but, am still seeking suggestions.
Thanks from an “old school” guy.

I would not suggest that you “create” a curriculum, but rather use the tons of resources already out there.

As a textbook and teacher guide, Faith and Life by Ignatius Press is the gold standard. If you do not currently have textbooks that you or your pastor like, then contact Ignatius and get the preview set sent out to you. They offer you a discount if you buy from the preview set. They have grades 1-8 in the Faith and Life series.

preK-1 also have the Image of God series from Ignatius Press that is really good.

For junior high, the Ascension Press bible study called “Encounter” is really good and we use it as a supplement to the Faith and Life series.

Your diocesan office of catechesis should have a K-12 scope and sequence, curriculum guides, and other resources plus training for DREs and catechists. Your diocese may also have textbook guidelines, catechist certification, and quite probably a lending library full of books, DVDs, etc, that you can check out.

As DRE if you will be in charge of safe environment, that is additional training and certification.

Please contact your diocese for guidance.

As a DRE you play an important role for the church. If you are looking for a hands on program and not just a textbook with instructions. It would be best that you create your on lesson plan. Make a list of everything that you want people to teach and give it to them. You can let them pick there on resources and just require that they teach what you have wrote. This will be their guide when you are not there.

Wow! The Holy Spirit is certainly in the air. I met with our pastor last night and we came to the same conclusion. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas!

I like Faith and Life as well, that’s what my parish uses.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Our pastor would like me to pursue the “no-text” approach. This is kind of a combination of LeBlanc’s book and the Family Formation program at familyformation.net/OurHistory.asp
So, wish me luck as I follow God’s plan for me.
