Celebration During Advent

I know that Advent is a season of penance and preparation. Does this mean that we should refrain from all celebrations (even ones that do not relate to the Incarnation) for the duration of the season? I am considering holding a watch party for the Democratic Debate on December 19, but I am wondering if such revelry would go against the spirit of Advent.

In my home at least, Advent is also joyous as we are looking forward to the birth of Christ. So yes it would be ok to have a good time during Advent.

Advent is a penitential season but I think this type of voluntary self punishment is taking it a bit to far.
