If a parishioner has some sort of gluten allergy or super sensitivity I know he is allowed to receive only from the blessed cup. What is the correct method or manner for someone to receive communion in this way? Does he bow before the consecrated bread and then just walk passed to the cup? Does he have to explain to the celebrant or minister in his place?

What if both elements are not offered? Just ask for the celebrants blessing?

Thanks in advance.

He does not have to approach the minister distributing the hosts but simply go straight to the one with the cup because Christ is whole and present under both species.

If the cup isn’t offered to the congregation, he should talk to his priest about being allowed to receive from the cup.

If the cup is not offered (especially if he’s in a parish where he doesn’t usually commune) he can certainly go up for a blessing, make a spiritual communion, and offer up his inability to receive the Eucharist for the sake of the poor souls and poor sinners or whatever intention he wishes.

Best solution is to just go to the person offering the cup of blood. If you come to a Parish like mine and we don’t offer the cup on Sunday Masses then you talk to the Priest before Mass and present yourself as one of the last people in line. You may easily be joining several other Celiacs or those allergic to wheat. Father will then put his ciborium down and pick up the chalice to bring to you (and any others).

Our Priest gave instruction on this during a “Ask the Priest” Q & A evening we had.

His suggestion was to speak with the Priest before Mass, letting them know the situation.

If the allergy is extremely severe the person may discuss this ahead of time with the priest and discuss how he/sh may receive from a separate cup. I’d bow if I had to walk past the bread and then go to the cup. If the lines work out so that a direct path is open to the cup then the person should go straight there.

We have such a situation in our parish, which does not offer the cup on Sundays. The individual’s celiac is so severe, that they cannot receive from the chalice because of the fraction of Host that is dropped into it. The solution is that this individual makes their presence known before Mass, and a smaller, separate chalice is prepared and consecrated with just a small amount of wine, which is given to that individual after the ministers of the Mass receive.

In your home parish, you should alert your priest to this condition, just to prevent any possible misunderstandings with lay people serving as an emHC at Mass. It’s possible in larger parishes that if a lay person ministering the Cup sees a communicant not receive the Host, they may deny the communicant the Cup because they do not know them and they do not know if they are Catholic or not. If the priest is aware, this situation could be diffused quite easily by him.

When travelling, you should simply call ahead if you are able and alert the priest of your condition to see how he would like you to handle Communion in his parish (or for him to find out how you would like it handled).

The problem that most don’t understand is that a celiac’s patient or a wheat allergy/anaphylaxis patient cannot be exposed to a minute amount of wheat. These ppl cannot receive from the cup that everyone else has received from becuase the prior communicants had wheat protein on their lips as they sipped. Therefore, there is wheat in the cup.

There are degrees of celiac. A dear friend of mine can tolerate small amounts of gluten. Some have the severe reaction you describe above, and there are many in between.

**Most with Celiac should not receive from the presiders cup. But they should receive from a Cup that does not have a piece of the Host in it. They should also receive first or at least among the first so that ladies that wear lipstick with wheat in it, go after us.

Also, according to my Priest, I approach the person with the Hosts, bow, pass by, go to the cup and receive.

If you have other questions feel free to PM me. I have Celiac.

I am also on vacation and have limited access to a computer, so I might not answer for a couple of days.
