Anyone ever hear of this movement? (I’m sure our Jewish friends on CAF have heard of it.)
In Chabad, a movement within Hasidic Orthodox Judaism, there is a group who believe the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Rebbe) is the Jewish Messiah. They either believe that he will some how return from the dead to redeem the Jewish people, or that he never actually died in the first place but is in hiding somewhere (possibly in some kind of heavenly abode), awaiting God to send him back as the Messiah. Though this movement has been strongly rejected by many other Orthodox Jews, it seems to still be going strong in the Orthodox Hasidic community. There is in fact an even more extreme version of this group that even many Chabad Messianist reject, and that is the idea that the Rebbe is God incarnate; this extreme variation in the Chabad Messianic movement raises the Rebbe even above the status of a Tzadik (a very righteous person in Judaism who in a sense is a “quasi-incarnation” of God), and portraying the Rebbe as the same as God; this group prays to the Rebbe and even worship him as God.
