Years ago I was known for being a caring person. Now family, friends and boyfriends seem to think I am self absorbed and I do not care for anyone but myself. Which I sadly believe is true. When did I lose my sense of compassion? I used to care about people now I just don’t. I keep wondering when this all happened. When I was younger, as a child, I was told I was so kind. Since my teenage years, I lost a lot of that.

Things like this don’t happen overnight. They happen because we aren’t paying attention. We aren’t paying attention to those around us, how much we eat, how much alcohol we drink. Therefore we wake up one day years later alone, or obese, or an alcoholic and believe it happened suddenly. Things like this happen because we are self centered(self with a little s) rather than Self centered. I’m speaking from experience here.
The more I do for others without expecting anything in return(difficult for me) the easier it becomes. I’ve heard it called “fake it until you make it”. In another thread someone wrote about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These are all great tools to help us transform from who we don’t want to be into who we do want to be.
Also I generally see myself much differently than others perceive me. I believe we are much harder on ourselves than others are on us. I also believe that when someone is labeling me as good, generous, arrogant, obnoxious, helpful, self centered, they are seeing traits in me that they either value-good, generous,-or hate-self centered, obnoxious, that they have. I know when I take the time to look in the mirror this is what I see in me when I think either ill or good of someone else. So don’t be too fixated on what others think, but do make an effort to become a better, more caring person. We can all improve in this department.
May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be well. May you be peaceful and at ease. May you be happy.

Unless a younger person asks for advice, it doesn’t do any good go keep “wondering”.
It happened apparently.

Change yourself and change the perception… When your habits change, the “why” will become available obvious to you, and the change will take root.
People always prefer good.

Jesus gave us the formula for improvement.
Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart.
Being meek means gentle.
Humble means putting the others first…in our love for them.

This is a nice exam of conscience.

Is there something in your life that is taking over? I guess to an extent this is normal, for example now me and my friends have entered the daily grind of work and committed relationships we do have less time and energy for each other than when we were students. I imagine a lot has changed for you since childhood, are you a workaholic or in a stressful job? Do you have a hobby that takes up a lot of your time?

It is impossible for anyone in these forums to answer that question for you.

I have gone through a similar situation; however, it is because I became ill … one can get self-absorbed when ill … you can change it though … it’s not hard to go backwards and remember how you showed people you were interested in them and their lives … I can even do it being ill.
