Has anyone here ever changed jobs or career in order to reduce their daily commute?

Other than the commute I genuinely like my job. With light traffic I can drive there in an hour. But traffic is gradually getting worse, so public transit is the only practical option. To get in for 8am I must get up by 5:30 am, and out the door by 6 am to catch a train at 6:30. A mishap in that chain can easily make me 30+ min late.

Commutes can make or break your day.

But honestly, I don’t think that 5:30 is that bad for starting at 8 and taking public transit. I’m in a rural area and had to drive about 40 minutes in order to find a, safe affordable rental. Most people had to drive. Some people lived in the city but it still took them a while to get into work.

So I guess the question is what other opportunities would offer.

That sounds rough. With that kind of commute, if I had a family I wanted to spend more time with, then I would definitely be looking for another job. If I was single or didn’t have kids, maybe not.

I think about my brother whenever the topic of commuting comes up. He drives for nearly 4 hours round trip each day. That’s 20 hours of driving in one week. Imagine losing 1 full day a week of just commuting to get to work.

My wife and Iive in the city and ride bicycles for our 15 minute commute. Time is one thing we will never compromise. I would take a job that pays less for this reason. Life is too short to spend time commuting.

But only you can answer this question. Is it worth it to you?

Yes. Well, I didn’t quit the job just because of the commute - but I found a better one and made sure it was closer in addition to being better in every other way. I only worked there 10 months I think - 30 minute drive, hour on a bike, which I did twice a week; it was little too long for me anyway. I hated driving to work and have never done it since; I bike or take the bus, a mixture, much shorter distances. I make it a priority to live as close to work as possible. I highly recommend cutting commute time. I know so many people who suffer from this everyday (up to 2 hours one way) and really lose a heck of a lot of valuable family/home/personal/sleep time. Do the math for five years and you’ll see my point. Take this idea seriously - it is a quality of life issue.

Yes.

Changed jobs to one that paid more and that was only about 5 minutes from where I live. That way I only have to stress over the job and not the traffic too.
