Hello,

I know that in the past at least, that religious at least would change their names and usually add a devotion at the end (i.e. Mary Bernard of the Five Wounds, Michael of the Holy Name of Jesus, etc.) Is this still a common practice, and is it only for religious? Can a diocesan priest have the option to change his name at the time of ordination?

It depends on the religious community and I do not think Diocesan clergy ever practiced this, but I do know now they do not. Its sad that alot of religious do not practice this any more : (

Hello,

But could a Diocesan Priest change his name at ordination or is there a prohibition against this. I know that when I was confirmed that we were strongly urged to choose our current name as a confirmation name, but if a different one was desired that it could be done. Is this akin to the current situation with the Priesthood and Religious Life?

I don’t think the secular clergy ever took different names, but I am not 100% sure. With religious communities it is i at the permission of your superior.
