Changing Translations

I’m interested in understanding how the bible translations change over time. What’s the process to ensure the next translation is honest and correct in its representation of the original texts? It seems very strange to be brought up with a certain verbiage and years later hear the readings use a different word - even a change so significant as “chosen one” versus “beloved”.

Anyone out there study or know much about biblical translations and the process they go through? Are approved, Catholic, translations constantly coming out or is there an update process which occurs every decade or so?

This is a good question. I recently bought a Douey Reims bible becasue I wanted to read the English translation of the Latin Vulgate from St. Jerome back in the late 4th century. (and compare with modern translations) Now Jerome had access to manuscripts that we do not have access to today. However with the manuscripts we have today, the scholars have a better understanding of the Greek than Jerome (Or at least they claim to have).

But what is the best translation? For specifically apologetics Here’s my order:

Ignatius Bible
Douey Rheims
New American Bible
