I have come across people online who offer to pray for people for money. They say they will pray for anyone and will not let money be a barrier for prayer.

Is it wrong to charge money for a spiritual service?

I think of spiritual directors who have professional training and might charge for sessions, people online charging money for prayers, etc.

Does that differ from a priest being paid to be a priest?

It is NOT wrong for a spiritual director to be paid for the work that they do!
Being a spiritual director is different but similar to being a counselor, and a
spiritual director is NOT necessarily a priest or even a religious.

I’ve never heard of a Christian nor a Catholic charging money to pray for anyone.
Having said that I am aware the Christian Scientist (they do consider themselves
Christian’s but other Christian’s don’t consider them a Christian) have practitioner’s
who do charge to pray for/with individuals. Christian Scientist generally do not go to
doctors but rather they go to or call Christian Science practitioners who pray over
them/with them for their healing helping them to come to right thinking!

First off you might want to edit your post. Pretty sure it is against forum rules to place an advertisement for a non affiliated site in your response.

Second I’m pretty sure the OP meant pray for YOU. Not pray INSTEAD OF you.

I remember hearing an apologist once say that this was practiced at one time in the Church. Money was never “charged” though. He said widows, who could not work, would spend the entire day in the Church praying for your intentions. While you and others who could work and didn’t have as much time to pray would help support her and any children.

It was considered an act of charity towards the widow while also giving her the dignity of helping others.

I think it would be a good thing within a community. However, taking it on line is taking it to far.

The prayer of a righteous person availith much. I would say a widow who spends 12 hours a day would be just the person you want praying for you.

God Bless

1 Timothy 5:17-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”

1 Corinthians 9:14 English Standard Version (ESV)

14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

Not allowed to suggest someone use any site services?
The way I read the ruling you could of said here’s the site I use, because it was on topic. But as soon as you posted the details, including the cost, it made your post look like a promotional advertisement for that site, which is against the rule.

Just didn’t want you to get flagged.
