I am somewhat beside myself! Our Eucharistic Vigil has been bilingual for the past decade — with a large number of Hispanics attending (my personal belief is that most of them understand and speak English, but that’s a whole new thread).
This yr., a new cantor is determining the music, along with the music leader for the Spanish choir,and I have been attending the practices (I’m also a cantor). The music is: Exultet (which I will chant)
4 bilingual psalms (ok)
then a spiritual — Lead Us, Lead Us to the Water Wash Us, Wash Us in the River (with a rainstick being used!) for the blessing of the water
Water of Life (Agua de Vida) for sprinkling (ok)
Jaime Cortes Litany of Saints — all in Spanish (I was in favor of doing our traditional Litany)
Alleluia is “Halle, Halle, Halle — luia” —yuck
The closing, instead of Jesus Christ is Risen Today, is something called “No One in the Tomb” — very jazzy and syncopated. They think it’s great because everyone will love the rhythm and the congregation will be so enthralled. All of this will be accompanied by piano, guitar, and bass guitar (who knows what else).
Make me feel better, guys! I’m feeling as if the Easter Vigil has been hijacked, and instead of our traditional, majestic liturgy, we’re going to have a party.
As my sister says, maybe I’m just moping, like Job, because they’re not doing it my way!
