It is difficult to ensure that your almsgiving is being put to good and efficient use. After disappointments with some charities I eventually eliminated all charities other than Catholic organizations. I am not suggesting that I give a great deal of money or that I am a great philanthropist, just that I want to be prudent about what money I can give.
Now, I have a great interest in a particular ministry and I am thinking of giving everything other than my weekly parish donation to that ministry that I trust. The question arises because it seems that my donations will go to either that one group, or the church operating budget, and nothing will go to the poor.
I am not asking whether anyone else thinks I should give to the poor. I am asking if it is church teaching that we must give to the poor specifically; or does all charity count as almsgiving?
