Not sure if this is the right forum? Anyway.

I am currently involved with supporting the united way of southeast Michigan’s meals on wheels program. I have read articles that certain untied way divisions may be affiliated with pro-choice groups. I did learn that my chapter of united way was listed as an active charity within the Michigan Archdiocese.

My question is whether it is wrong to support this charity because other branches of this charity might support pro-choice. Or is it ok because I am only supporting a local branch in my local community which is not affiliated with pro-choice?

I would suggest you support you local crisis pregnancy center, parish food bank, etc.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will contact my local parish so see what type of volunteer opportunities I could lend my time to.

As a side question, I currently I am not a Catholic (getting info on RCIA). That being said, would there be a problem with volunteering through a Catholic charity when I am not Catholic yet?

Round here, we welcome all willing hands!

If your local chapter of United Way does not give any money to Planned Parenthood (or similar groups) it is probably okay.

However, I still wouldn’t give to them. They’re pretty much just a “middleman”. I prefer to give directly to the charity I wish to support.

I agree with Joe…the best way to make your charitable donations count is to directly donate to an organization whose mission is clearly stated and completely visible. Catholic Relief efforts at the International, National or local levels are great and very high percentage of the donation goes to direct application to the needy. Catholic organizations as a whole are very thrifty in the administrative department working with consecrated volunteers at every level as well as volunteers like us. Local food banks are always a good choice along with shelters that assist the homeless. Don’t forget to tithe to your local parish as many charitable ministries are organized through this means.

I am sure Meals on Wheels will accept donations directly.
The original question was about me actually delivering the meals, not giving a monetary donation. Not sure if it makes a difference.

Get in touch with the organization and clarify that point. I cannot imagine a situation where your denomination would prevent you from participating. However, you may need to take some type of qualifying training, etc. Good for you in your investigation of RCIA! and hurray for your idea of being the hands of Christ, too!:clapping:

There is a thread on this subject that has some good comments…

If your only participation is actually delivering the meals, I see nothing wrong with that. My husband worked with meals on wheels for a couple of years and they helped many, many individuals who othewise would not have had good nutritious food for the day. That is a long way from directly supporting abortion.

Our parish is a big participant in delivering Meals on Wheels.

Even if United Way did support a pro-choice organization someplace, I have trouble understanding how depriving elderly invalids of food would be a very convincing pro-life response.

Thank you everyone for confirming what I was more or less thinking all along.
I am looking forward to being able to make a difference (however small) in someones life who may be less fortunate then I am.👍

I work for a small prestigious liberal firm where 100% of the employees contribute to the United Way and it is strongly recommended that I contribute. I am a pro-life practicing Catholic and do not want to contribute because they support planned parenthood in my area. I hope I do not loose my job if I refuse to contribute. They want to take contributions out of my paycheck and have offered to make a contribution in my name where I do not actually give any of my salary to charity. What would you recommend?

It obviously depends upon your conscience and your commitment. I faced this issue many years ago in the company I worked for, it was before roe v wade but united way was already involved in questionable charities. I am sorry to say I folded and succumbed to the pressure, however, today I am more independent and would probably challenge the pressure a bid more; especially since there are now proven ties between United Way and Planned Parenthood. I know that our culture has changed to accept more and more of these immoral practices. Even in this corrupt culture I find it hard to believe that any company would openly force contributions to an organization that you have moral objections to. It is not inconceivable however, that you could be discriminated against using some other excuse.
