is it a sin to go to chat rooms?

such as a husband who talks to numerous women in chat rooms every night. Even if they are not talking “sex” just chit chat? Is it not a form of pursuing women’s attention when you are married? is it not a form of flirtation that should only be used for the marriage ?

It’s virtual flirting. Sooner or later he’ll go into a private chat room for a one-on-one intimate conversation.

Your best bet is to put a stop to it or sit next to him during his chat sessions.

Going to internet chat rooms is not an inherently sinful act. That said, there are certainly occassions where it could be sinful.

I might chat with women here at CAF and it’s not sinful because that’s not why I come here. I come to talk theology with whoever happens to be here (whether male or female). For a husband to seek out other women for the purpose of “virtual flirting” (as Jguerra put it), would be a near occassion to sin, at the very least.

People often do not start out doing terribly bad things. They usually start out with smaller, seemingly benign things (like this) that in turn make it easier to do those terrible things down the road. That’s what putting one’s self in an “occasion of sin” does.

So even if the chatting going on right now seems “harmless”, it’s not making it easier for the husband to live a virtuous life committed to his wife.

Certainly not, but there’s a difference if a man is seeking out women and trying to foster close relationships with them when he is already married. If a guy is going to chat rooms with the express purpose of talking with women and building relationships with them, that can be sign of trouble ahead.
