Chatting in the Pews: Subject Matter?

I noticed the examples of Mass attendees around the approximate 50- 70 year age group chatting before and at times during the Mass. Is this some sort of interpretation of “Spirit of Vatican II” ? Mass went from Latin to Novus Ordo, so let’s remove statues,remove kneelers, hide the tabernacle in the closet,read our bulletins during Father’s homily,chat away before, during Mass, no examination of conscience, small confession lines,empty out the pews for Communion, irreverence in the Communion lines, receive communion, throw Jesus back in the closet. and run right out the door. No wonder the youth in the past 40 years leave the Church in their teens and early twenties. Father John Corapi S.O.L.T. has been teaching Catholics since the 1990’s on the sixteen documents of the Second Vatican Council. Spirit of Vatican II of Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is correctly interpreted about God the Holy Spirit to Pope John XXIII and the Cardinals on faith and morals of the church and the modern world. Not to be “modernist,” “relativist,” and/or “progessivism.” I’m 45 years old and left the Church at 18 years old in 1982. I returned at 37 years old in 2001. I expected to learn from my elders about Mass and almost left in 2003 to become Southern Baptist. But I stayed Catholic and will continue. The big problem is lack of catechesis. I have hit many Catholic books for the past eight years along with Catholic radio, tv, internet. Mainly alot of today’s Mass attendees are clueless about even the basic tenets of their faith. My correction on spelling for Pope John XVIII to Pope John XXIII. Lack of catechesis from the past 40 years has caused many problems in our parishes as well as diocesan communities and multiplies worse in more wealthy parishes and dioceses. My apologies to those offended. Money,wealth,social status,education status are not to be used by the laity to tell the priests and bishops on how the Church and the Mass is to be run without the guidance of the magisterial teaching of the Church. I noticed wealthy parishes have become very noisy before Masses. Nothing wrong about conversations with our brothers and sisters. After Mass outside the church building is a more appropriate time for this. For many people, an hour in the church building is all they have to celebrate the Mass of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. At times during Mass I find myself singing the hymns and reciting prayers like I’m almost alone in the crowd. If more emphasis in full participation of the Mass with conviction toward our relationship with God, there would be less chatter. I am sinful fallable person. Because we are all sinners. I attend Reconciliation at least once a month and at times close to weekly. Many people attending Mass think they don’t really sin at all which is a very disastrous way of living the faith. Mass is the highest form of communal and private prayer to God. Our elders who have celebrated Mass in the Latin form should know better to pass the reverence and respect of Mass down toward further generations. I attended a Tridentine Latin Mass for the first time in January 2009. Very little chatter and mostly church and faith related. Singing,praying, reverence so much higher. More Reconciliation attendance and reverence at Holy Communion. I hear Novus Ordo attendees complaining on Latin Mass not understanding Latin language. No wonder, they don’t understand or so ignorant of their Catholic faith, they don’t think much a Novus Ordo Mass of their own native language anyway. They need to reconcile in their own sinfulness and start attending Sacrament of reconciliation more frequently. My parish pastor priest recommends about once a month. God bless.

Excellent point. I wish I could get into the habit of examining my conscience every night.

Two perspectives:

I am the president of the Catholic Student Association at my college. Because it is a protestant leaning college, there is no Catholic chapel or Catholic Church on campus (and very little funds for that matter. In fact, before I came to that college, they were forced, and I do mean forced, to use ceramic paten and chalice because of funds. I bought a gold chalice for the group, and am trying to find an inexpensive gold ciborium as well to buy for them. Just a side note in case anyone knows where to get one besides Ebay, because I can’t find one). Anyway because we do not have a tabernacle and, therefore, the Real Presence in the chapel we generally “chat” before Mass, though it is still low whispers in case someone is trying to pray.
At the local parish, the only “chatting” that I have noticed is asking each other how they are (health wise) and any other prayer request that they’re friends might have, then going straight into prayer for them.
