Why are there statues of Cherubims as baby angels when their description in the Bible is completly different?

The work of an artist is not of necessity based on Scripture.

Sine no angel has a body - they are pure spirits, representing them as a baby is about as relevant as representing them as anything else.

In other words, it is art - not theology.

The baby angel called a cherub is derived from statues of the pagan god Eros (in Greek) or Cupid (in Latin). Cherub is a Hebrew word, and the idea of composite creatures – part human, part lion or bull, with wings, etc. – is common throughout the ancient Near East.

I dunno. Maybe it was the idea that the cherubim being at the bottom of the totem pole, as it were, were not “mature”, which leads then to artists as portraying them as we understand that lack of maturity - i.e. “youth”. And from there, not a great step to “baby” like.

On the other hand, it may also be from an innate fear of a being with presumed powers far beyond the ken of man; and by reducing them to “babies” they remove or alleviate that fear of a being who is often portrayed in warrior terms. Guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden not being the task for the “faint of heart”.

Idk but considering the Enemy is said to have been one of the Cherubim before the fall now I have a new image of him that is quite haunting…
Probably as an image of purity. That kind of depiction is Western, in the East Angels are never depicted as babies and definitely never naked.
The truth is all recordings of angelic apparitions present the Angels to look like young men, I mean like people, no wings. The wings are symbolic they represent their supernatural identity.

Every angel is its own species. The Cherubim are the second highest rank of angel with Seraphim being the highest. The Cherubim help those with Scrupulosity and those needed help with Chastity. I have no idea why they portrayed as babies, I can see them symbolized as powerful little ones, and maybe Purity as Mary said above since they help with Chastity and Purity.

As far as I’m concerned, the little angels are called Putti, which most people got mistaken for Seraphim or Cherubim. 👼👼👼

That’s AWESOME!!! I wish I’d known that in my teen years. It would have saved me a lot of agony suffering from scrupulosity.

A thought just came to me: Maybe all the OPs who are suffering from scrupulosity should see your marvelous post.
