Hello Everyone!
As far back as I can remember, I was always told to be sure when receiving the Eucharist that one should NEVER EVER chew .if the host is caught on the roof of the mouth one must try to work it down then let it melt. Is this still in affect? I see so many people chewing like they have a stick of gum. also is it possible when reciving the Eucharist in the hand that some particles can be found in the palm? if so than receiving by mouth should be the only way. thank you. Let me know your feelings on this kind of two part question.

This has been discussed before. To put it very simply and as charitably as I know how, you were taught wrong. If your experience is anything like mine, it wasn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last.

To see it done right, watch the jaw muscles of the priest on EWTN’s daily masses.

If you receive in the hand, any crumbs that remain in your hand should be licked off and consumed. I know, sounds gross, but those are the rules. Jesus in the Eucharist is to be consumed, not brushed off on the floor. :bigyikes:

yeah, my mom was taught this too. more recently it hasn’t been taught - not to my generation. I don’t think you’ll find any current directive one way or the other. So I would recommend doing what is in keeping with your personal piety. I would however submit that there is a reverent way to chew, and an irreverent way to chew.

There was just a long thread on this a few days back - check this forum for that.

This may be a hold-over from before Vatican II. I don’t have any specific references (maybe it was in the 1907 Code of Canon Law?), just an anecdotal one: My dad told me that before Vatican II you weren’t supposed to let the Host touch your teeth. I don’t know if this was simply what he was taught or if it was standard practice.

Thank you both very much, I have been away for awhile so I miss out on alot. Sorry I should haved checked! before opening my trap. I do check some of the time.Take Care,:tiphat:

Romie
