Actually I believe the movie is called “The Nativity Story”.

Mayor Daley from Chicago is a man who professes himself as a “Catholic”. Although he is Pro-Abortion and Pro Gay Marriage.

The argument from the city is they do not want the advertising to offend anyone. You think Mayor Daley would ask everyone if his marching in Chicago’s Gay Pride every year would offend anyone.

It seems like we just got done defending the movie “The Passion of Christ” before it came out and now we have to defend the movie “The Nativity Story”. At least we know when the mainstream media attacks a religious movie, its probably a great one. I plan on seeing the movie soon!

By the way, the movie was produced by Christians rather than Catholics. I heard there are just two places in the movie where it does not follow Catholic teaching. Otherwise, please call and complain to Mayor Daley and then see the movie!

I have a few things to say…
  1. Just goes to show those who preach tolerance are the most intolerant of all.
  2. No Room at the Inn Irony!
  3. Once again, the minority rules.
  4. Political correctness is tyranny of the minority.

I sent this to his Lordship mayor Daley or is it Herod?

Since the city of chicago does not see fit to allow visitors to see the advertisement for the film The Nativity - we have decided to cancel our vist there. We will tell all our friends and family about this arrogant display of hatred and censorship. Unbelievable in the land of the free that petty little bureacrats can stop a film from being shown–about the birth of the Lord.

What are you so afraid of?

If the chamber was concerned about it then it was up to them. The city’s response was probably silly, but if the chamber was uneasy about it, if I had been the city official, I’d had said we won’t do it. This doesn’t seem like a “war on Christmas” to me, this seems more like when they were talking about putting the Spiderman logos on the bases in major league baseball.

This is a tempest in a teapot. I have not been to the festival yet, but my wife and I plan to attend this Sunday after Mass (since our parish is downtown).

None of this changes the way I feel about the festival.

I remember growing up and asking my parents, “Who will be MayorDaley when Mayor Daley dies?” As a 10 year old I thought the title of the job was “Mayor Daley”. It is, BTW 😉

Nah…it’s run by an attorney named Mat Staver who is wholly owned and operated by Jerry Falwell. I’m not impressed. Nothing the City of Chicago has said or done has put Christmas in peril. Goodness!

My wife, daughter, and I went to Christkindlmarkt downtown today after Mass. It was great and crowded, even without people it would have been crowded. Simply put, there was no room for advertising the movie, nor would it have been appropriate. As it is some of the Catholics far right of me find The Nativity blasphemous. Maybe it was too controversial to be shown. Anyway, while there might be reasons to dump on Mayor Daley, this is not one of them IMHO.

I agree in so far as all the noise and fury ultimately doesn’t really affect the Christmas functions at Daley Plaza one bit. People will still show up - LOTS of people. Customers will still spend money - LOTS of money. Most don’t even know about the controversey. And many of the people who were “upset” probably weren’t going to come into town and spend dollars, anyway… or they still will, just at another time and place.

Just for those who were following this, the city permitted this last week some time. I don’t know that it matters very much though.

What precipitated it? Was there a lawsuit involved or anything? Was it that some found it to be almost anti-Catholic, so it was now ok? 😉

I thought that this country was founded on the principles of “Freedom OF Religion” and not “Freedom FROM Religion”.

From what I have read, it seems reactionaries/zealots blew it out of proportion and I got sucked in once again to a lie. The city never said it was banned. What they didnt want was a continuous “loop” advertising the movie playing. Sounds reasonable to me. Not one theater banned this movie.

I read in the paper somewhere - I don’t know if it was a John Kass coulmn or what - that son Patrick Daley, because he is serving in the Army in Iraq and has an MBA, might be groomed to succeed him.

BTW, what western suburb are you in?

He’ll have to fight me for it… I’m in the bloodline (though on Sis’s side) also!
