Children Excused From Mass?

Some places it is.

The latest terminology seems to be “Faith Formation”. I believe the idea is that it covers ALL ages, including adults.

Before that it was “Religious Education” which was usually shortened to just RE.

The term my parish uses is PSR–parish school of religion, I think.

Many parishes have the RE classes during the week, so I guess Sunday school isn’t appropriate any more, but when I was going, moons ago, it was held right after Mass on Sunday.
