Every now and then a tv show will do a “What ever happened to…” featuring stories that were big news items in years past. Does anyone know about the following children who were featured in high profile pro-life cases back in the 1980’s?
  1. Phillip Becker. He had Down Syndrome and his birth parents did not want him to have a heart operation because they did not think his life was worth extending. A family who visited him at the home he was at wanted to adopt him and give him the operation because they loved the kid. George Will and 60 Minutes did stories on him. What ever happened to him?
  2. Baby with Spina Bifida. Her parents did not want to have the gap in her back closed allowing for a “natural” death because they too did not feel her life was worth living. I think a court ordered it to be done.
These stories pop into my mind every so often and I wonder if they defied the odds and had happy and satisfying lives.

Thank you so much for that information. I am glad that Phillip had a happy ending. In reading the tribute to Jay Spears, the lawyer who helped the Heath family, I am reminded that heros are born when adversity presents itself to us. God bless his soul.

I am haunted by the little girl. Was her family from the New York area? Did her parents finally accept her when the surgery was performed ? Did they put her in an institution like Phillip was put in? Did someone outside of her family come to her rescue? I can only pray that her story had a happy ending, too.
