At my church during the Children’s Mass on Christmas Eve, the kids read the readings (except the Gospel) and did a Nativity skit during the homily time. After skit, Father did give a brief homily. Is this in accordance with regs allowed for children Masses to have skit and kids read? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and God bless all and may 2005 be a year to grow closer to Our Lord, His Church and Our Lady.

I have no idea about the skit, but I don’t think there’s any problem with having children read the Scriptures (except for the Gospel, obviously) at a Mass of their peers- as long as they are good readers and are instructed in proper reverence. I attended Catholic school at an orthodox parish for grades 1-8 and it was standard practice to have students read the Scriptures at school Masses. I also occasionally listen to Mass on the radio (broadcast from the Shrine of the Little Flower), and a couple of days each week they have a “school” Mass with students reading and serving.

My grandson was an angel and my son sang in the youth choir for the childrens Christmas Vigil Mass. The children acted out all the parts relating to the Nativity. Mary and Joseph, 3 wise men and so forth.

The DRE did the readings and Father read the Gospels. He gave a fantastic homily to boot.

My parish is blessed to have a wonderful religious ed director and a very holy priest.
