Lent is in full swing. From the humble but reliable breaded fish square to sturdy cod to elegant salmon, the aroma of fish is in the air in parishes around the country. What is your favorite kind of fish served at Lenten parish fish fries?

Fried Catfish with hush puppies. So good, I don’t eat it during Lent as a form of penance.

I haven’t been to a Lenten fish fry.

As for my favorite fish in general, it depends. Cod is great for fish-n-chips, but I have had mahi-mahi fish-n-chips, and those were the best fish-n-chips I’ve ever had. Both are also great for fried fish sandwiches or pretty much any context in which deep-frying and tartar sauce are involved.

For other cases, I really like salmon. While lemon-garlic seems to be the most popular, probably the best I’ve had generally is teriyaki-based, though I’ve also had some terrible teriyaki salmon. Poke and sushi are also at their best with salmon in my opinion.

There’s a food truck that occasionally comes near my office that serves catfish sandwiches. Unfortunately, they make some pretty awful catfish sandwiches. There’s too much breading. It is often cold, and the the “spicy” sauce isn’t spicy at all. Some people apparently love it, though.

I’ve seen a lot of fish fries in my life. The best I’ve had were catfish, cod or halibut.

When I lived in Illinois, there was this place in Elgin, not associated with a Church, but a restaurant that had an all you can eat fish fry on Fridays… both halibut and catfish. Not overly breaded, done quite well.

Any! I’ve never been to a fish fry ,we don’t seem to have them over here.
And now I’m feeling hungry 😊

Catching fish is very common here; but not fish fries.

I prepared shrimp patties last week for the next few Fridays.

Recipe:

mince shrimp and put in bowl

saute onion, bell pepper, garlic and put in bowl

nuke potatoes and mash and put in bowl

salt ; pepper

bread crumbs

egg

mix the misture in bowl and form into patties

dust with flour/corn meal and fry (pan or deep)

boiled shellfish is most common here.

shellfish prices plummet after Good Friday; which is the best income day for a retail shellfish dealer

In the south, it is always catfish (the reason I do not eat at fish fries, well, that and because they use frozen french fries, ugh).

My favorite fish is cooked at the Mayflower in Jackson, MS. The grilled Amberjack, served with fries and the bread pudding for desert. Close second is in the same city, the grilled Redfish at Bill’s Greek Tavern (God Bless America!!)

Most places here in Wisconsin for parish fish frys don’t seem to give you a choice.

It seems to be breaded and deep-fried Alaskan Cod, which is one of my favorite types of fish anyway. 🙂

Many years ago, I was Scoutmaster of a troop sponsored by a local parish…my assistant scoutmaster was a representative for the Canadian Department of Fisheries, and marketed fish throughout the Great Lakes area.
Our troop did fish fries in the parish hall as a fundraiser for summer camp, and he provided the fish - legit blue pike fillets…we sold out every time.

Well I don’t know what kind of fish this is, but it’s good, and big.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Makes up for the guy sitting by me who just spent 10 minutes talking about how he hates fish, hates fish fries, hates crab cakes, and finished by saying the church up the road has better fish. I want to ask him, “How would you know, if you hate fish so bad?”

And now he’s ranting about Trump.

Yeah, halushki. They had pierogies too, I got some to go. They also had mac n cheese but ran out before I got any. I’ll have to come back. This is the church I buried the husband out of so I’m here from time to time.

I’d stomp kittens for some pierogies. You simply do not find them here in the South.

I once chased a Schwann’s truck down because I knew they carry frozen pierogies!

I come from Pierogiland, but because my mom, being Irish and from a town where the Irish and Poles didn’t hang out with each other despite both being Catholic, was not going to eat that stuff or serve it to Dad the WASP, I never even saw a plate of pierogies till I was about 40. I asked a guy from my hometown in a bar in Parma, Ohio, “What’s that you’re eating?” And he looked at me like I just got off an alien spaceship.
