I was told a while back that at some point in time, families in China were only allowed a certain number of children by gender. If they had too many of a certain gender, the child would be forced to die. Is that accurate? And if so, did the Church ever speak out? It’s murder!!

China has a nationwide population control measure since art least the 1950s. Look up “one child policy”.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-child_policy

A large portion of families were allowed to have one child. A second child could result in fines and other penalties.

However, cultural preference for boys meant a lot of girls were killed or abandoned shortly after birth by their families. Also, there are reports of forced abortions but I don’t know how accurate that is.

China is going to be in big trouble soon. The ratio of males to females is way off and there are not enough females available now for marriage and child bearing. Bride kidnappings and forced marriages are getting to be too common in some places. India will have the same problem. 😦

I believe it is very accurate. One of my favorite charities is Women’s Rights without Frontiers, who specialize in saving girl babies in China. Here is their website.
One of their programs provides an allowance to a woman for a year to help her avoid aborting a daughter.

"China’s population control program, called the “One Child Policy,” is enforced through coercive measures including forced abortion and forced sterilization.

Since the majority of those aborted are female, the One Child Policy has created gender imbalance that is a powerful, driving force behind sexual slavery in Asia."

By 2020 Chinas working age population will begin to shrink. Meaning an end to “cheap labor”.

Total pop is 1.4 billion now, but by the end of the century will below 1.0 billion. India will take over as largest population. India’s male/female ratio will be in much better shape too.

It’s a very fascinating subject.

Oddly, nearly all of the downsides are economic or related to social systems that require infinite growth.

Yet no one looks at the upside of population stabilization/decline.

India also has a gender imbalance. At least the ChInese have the pressure of a one child policy as an excuse. India does not have a one child policy but they are competing with China when it comes to killing off girls.

Future generations of India and China will have an ever expanding of the elderly to support.

I won’t be surprised if euthanasia of the elderly becomes suddenly popular in those countries.
