1Cor1:11 Talks of a disciple of Paul named Chloe. Liberal Catholic woman told me this is proof that woman should be deacons/priests. Who was Chloe - what was her role?
She was a woman who owned a house that people lived in.
Here is the verse from different versions of the Bible
NAB: For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you.
NIV: My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
NASB: For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you.
KJV: For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
NKJV: For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you.
Anyway, there is never mention of the word disciple, it mentions household, which means that the people who lived in her house were the ones that informed Paul of the problems in Corinth.
Even if the word disciple would have been used, disciple doesn’t equate to deacon or priest. There were women disciples of Christ, but only the 12 male Apostles were ordained to Holy Orders. Disciple means to “follow the discipline of” and we are ALL disciples of Christ.
On top of all that, we can’t even be sure if the person mentioned was even a female, as the name Chloe is a translation of whatever his or her Aramaic/Hebrew/Greek/Latin name would have been at the time, it could have just as easily been a man. Just ask my good friend Stacy what kind of confusion reigns people read his name.
