I want to buy a missal to use for private devotions. I am considering the 1962 Roman Missal or the 1953 Saint Joseph Daily Missal. Can someone advise me as to the best choice? Is there something better that either of these?

No matter what year, go for a daily one if you can. In the long run, it’ll pay off as they have not just the propers for every kind of Mass, but a lot more prayers and devotions that the Sunday only ones don’t have. The Angelus Press, St. Joseph 1953, and Baronius Press missals are all pretty good with some distinctions between the three, e.g. type setting and such.

St Josephs Daily and Continuous are both good basic Missals however, the St. Andrews Daily Missal, 1945 edition is the most complete that I have come across. It is published by St. Bonaventure Publications. The Daily Roman Missal published by Angelus Press is also quite good, but a lot of people don’t like dealing with Angelus Press due to their affiliation with SSPX.

I have “The New Marian Missal for Daily Mass” by Veritas Press. (Imprimatur 1958). I believe it is used by SS Pius X. Which means it is very traditional, free from modernist language. Very easy to read. Your preference.

I love collecting missals and studying liturgical history. 🙂 I really enjoy the St. Andrew Daily Missal from Bonaventure Press. However, it is a little dated even for the TLM as celebrated today. See, the edition of the traditional Mass celebrated today is from the 1962 Missal. A series of reforms occured to the Mass prior to Vatican II. Beyond some rather large (but not non-organic) changes to Holy Week in 1955, certain rubrical reforms and removal of a few feastdays occured in the 1960 by Bl. John XXIII. Also, the “Second Confiteor” of the faithful immediately before the people’s Communion was technically removed in 1962, along with the name of “St Joseph” being added to the Canon in the same year.

A better missal is the “Roman Catholic Missal” as published by Angelus or Baronius Press. From what I’ve heard (I haven’t ordered it yet) it contains what the St. Andrew’s Daily Missal contains, updated for the 62 Missal, and even a few more prayers. 🙂

Actually, it was removed in 1960, with the publication of the new Mass and Breviary rubrics. The suppression of the second Confiteor was covered in rubric 503 of Novo Rubricarum, 26 July 1960.
