Hi All!

I tried sitting down at my computer to do a search and got derailed looking at other things. LOL.

Moving along in the RCIA process, and for a while now have been pondering how to chose a saint for my comfirmation name.

The class we had in RCIA discussed that (at least for the person teaching that day) chosing someone you relate to was important.

I am pretty overwhelmed at the choices out there, and curious if anyone has some words of advice.

Here is my story so far:

A few months ago now, I had an interesting experience. Essentially, I listen to a lot of Catholic Radio, and the scheduled programs for a week or so were off air, and so they were playing pretaped shows. I normally listen at work. A few shows one day brought up saints, and for some reason I felt a HUGE connection that day to saints…I guess communion of saints? It just really struck me.

So, years ago when i graduated HS, I took private viola lessons. My teacher was eccentric, but I thought she was great. No idea what her religion is, possibly catholic though. For graduation she gave me a medallion necklace: it was St. Cecelia (patron saint of musicians). She told me what it was, and that I didn’t have to believe it if I didn’t want. I wore that necklace for years…it was sort of a good luck charm, though I didn’t actually believe it had powers or anything. It was representative of me as a musician, especially while I was studying music in college.

St. Cecilia was the saint that keeps coming to mind. That day I had some experiences of a desire of closeness to the communion of saints (I don’t know how else to word that) I prayed to a saint for the first time. St. Cecilia (Cecelia…suddenly don’t know how to spell it). I had some wonderful experiences that night…just the feelings of the Holy Spirit comforting me, the realization of all those that pray for me, and a desire for striving for sainthood (or just being the best in my faith as I can be)…among other things.

Beyond these past experiences, and my strong connection with music (music is very much a part of spirituality to me), I keep wondering if I should hold out and find a saint who I feel a connection with in terms of my personality?

Anyway, any help is appreciated! 🙂

Blessings to you all!

Find the Saint who is known for having the opposite of what is your greatest weakness. That is the Saint who can help you throughout your remainnig life.

Hoo boy. That’s why I’m really thinking of St. Therese.

I think it wonderful that you are putting so much thought into this.

As I started reading this thread, I realized that I did pick a name for confirmation (David), and I never really gave that a thought, nor thought of him as a patron saint. And I picked that because I thought it was a cool name.

Now the David I picked was from was from David and Goliath ( 1 Samuel 17 ). But as far as I can tell, that David has never been declared a saint, and Saint David is someone I never heard of before.

You have inspired me to do research, and pick an unofficial patron saint for myself.

There are many ways to pick a Saint and it is often said that a Saint picks you. Pick one that is opposite of you to give you something to work on. You can pick one that your life has similarities to. You can also pick one based upon a certain affection for. Pick one based upon your current occupation or a talent. To me it was one of the most fascinating parts about Confirmation to study the lives of Saints and to see how most began and how their lives were given to God.

Hey had another question thought I would bring up this thread again…

I still feel frustrated in my searching for a Saint. I wanted to make sure this is ok: I am currently thinking of having Cecilia as my confirmation name, but still not have her as my official Patron Saint.

I guess what I want to know is what sort of records does the church (if any) make of this? Is it only the confirmation name they record?

Sorry if that is a silly question. Is having a confirmation name separate from an official chosen patron saint typical, or happen frequently? I suppose there are many who pick names of a deceased loved one they are close to, right?

I’ve been looking at a website that has many Saints listed and grouped by catagories. The only one I keep coming up with is Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton because she was a mother and a convert. I love to read and my work is tax preparation so no help there:rolleyes:. It’s getting closer to Easter Vigil and this seems like an important decision.

I’ve chosen St. Micheal the Archangel and St. Thomas Aquinas as my patron saints. St. Micheal to protect and allow me to resist temptation and strengthen my will (recovering alcoholic and addict here) and St. Thomas Aquinas since he’s the patron of theologians, apologists, philosophers and scholars. Figured if there’s someone I’d like to reach toward and mimic, it’d be him.

Hello fellow tax accountant! Elizabeth Ann Seton did the bookkeeping for her family business and served as treasurer for a local charity, so… 😉
