Hello…

As a former Protestant…and former minister…I’m wrapping up RCIA and awaiting Confirmation. One of the things I’m struggling with is choosing a Patron Saint. Intellectually, St. Jerome is a great fit, and I share similar passions with study and interpretation of Scripture and…sadly…a cranky demeanor at times. However, spiritually I feel drawn…in a very deep way…to St. Dominic de Guzman…largely because of his focus on preaching, his focus on correcting heresy, his focus on Blessed Mary, and his focus on the Rosary…all of these are passions…and Mary and the Rosary have become a very big part of my life now. But St. Dominic is Patron Saint for astronomers and falsely accused…and neither of these represent me. Is it possible to have St. Dominic as a Patron Saint for the reasons I mentioned without being an astronomer or falsely accused?

Thanks.

Todd

Yes, it is possible.

You can choose any saint to be your patron saint, from my understanding. You don’t have to have a big reason for it.

Edited to add: mine is St. Francis.

You pick the saint you feel drawn to. You don’t have to select one who matches your interests, or your given name, or anything else.
There is a school of thought that the saint picks you. Sounds like St. Dominic is calling your name. Go for it.

You can also still pray to St. Jerome without having him for your confirmation saint. You can pick as many patron saints as you want whenever you want. I probably have about 15 of them, although only one of them is my confirmation saint.

Hello and welcome, @Todd4Christ, from another Protestant minister on her way to the Church, who has also been developing a connexion to St Dominic of late.

Many congratulations on your upcoming confirmation !

You can pick any saint. It makes no difference. I am an Oblate of a Benedictine abbey and I had to pick a saint for my oblation. I am a woman, but I picked St. Bede who was male because of his writing in the fields of scripture and history. I am a passionate history buff, and Bede spoke to me because he is knows as the Father of English History.
