Does anyone have any insight on this? Do we know what the actual Greek word was used and if our understanding of ‘master’ reflects what the Greek meaning was trying to convey?

It may be more of a translation thing than anything?

I think of when Martha chastized Him when He was late after Lazarus died.
Also, after the resurrection when Mary called him “Rabboni” which, it is said, is translated as Master? (John 20:16)

Im just trying to understand the different from how we, who have been exposed to the term in terms of slavery, and what is meant by it in Scripture.

In Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic the word rabb means “master” in the sense of “teacher-master.” Suffixing -I gives rabbi, pronounced like the English name “Robbie,” NOT “rab-eye” and means “my master.” In Aramaic, rabb-on-i adds an honorific suffix between the base word and the 1st-person possessive suffix to give the meaning “my great master.” But, to repeat myself, it’s “master” in the sense of master teacher, not in the sense of master-slave.

Ah,

Christ is also describes as a ‘ruler’ (Greek ποιμανεῖς) , such as in Rev 2:27. This is a word that describes the type of authority that an Officer has over their troops, or a King over the people.

It is also the same word used to describe a shepherd over the flock, in Greek, a shepherd ‘rules’ over the flock. 🙂
