I was recently asked, “Why do Catholics believe that Christ ever descended into Hell…? Is it one of their traditions…? It isn’t in the Bible.” Can someone please help me with this…? Thank you.

Take a look at this thread…

Jesus went to “the place of the dead” which is called “Hades” in Greek, and sometimes translated as “Hell.” This was not the Hell of eternal punishment, though, but rather, it was a kind of Limbo where the dead were waiting for His coming.

Once He came, those who received Him with joy were welcomed into Heaven, and those who did not were consigned to everlasting punishment in Hell. The place of waiting then ceased to exist, and today, people go either to Heaven (sometimes via Purgatory, and sometimes directly) and others go directly to Hell.

The teaching is cited in: Eph.4 [8] Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”
[9] (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth?
[10] He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Jesus descended to the dead to, as says in 1Pt [19] “in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison,” and 1Pt. 4[6]"…the gospel was preached even to the dead, that though judged in the flesh like men, they might live in the spirit like God."

It’s a translation issue…Christ did not descend into hell, but rather went to the land of the dead, which was the abode of both the sinful and the just who died…he went there to reveal his mission in God’s Salvation plan by the release of the just.

Can you help me to find this explanation in the Scriptures, Neofight…?

“Hell” is used in scripture but see CCC 637 for a better understanding.
