Cardinal Robert Sarah, an African Cardinal, has written in his book, God or nothing

“We must not confuse poverty with destitution…The Son of God loves the poor; others plan to eradicate them through an unrealistic tyrannical utopia!”

My thoughts on his quote:

I believe Cardinal Sarah means poverty isn’t to be looked down upon. I can imagine an African village that is poor, but living a Godly life without the need for the riches of the West.

I would also make the distinction between poverty and material captivity. Material captivity is having to not be poor because of imposed standards of living in developed Western countries.

What are your thoughts?

I’m kinda confused. Aren’t we supposed to improve living conditions?

I’ve met poor people who feast like rich people.
Young people from non-affluent families spend as much money in the evening as my mom can buy food on the market for the whole month.
Young people from poor families - live, relax, enjoy the benefits as rich.
And then they complain that they are poor, and require special attention to them. There are many poor people who deserve to be in need.

It sounds like he’s talking about the push for abortion and how those who are pro choice often use the “it’s better that aren’t born rather than to be born into a poor family.”

They think all will be good if we don’t allow the poor to procreate.

The state and health care are obliged to help mothers and young children.
The most defenseless cannot be thrown to the mercy of fate.
