I apologize if this was posted against elsewhere; I have difficulty navigating this site.

My husband and I would like to join a Christian cost share plan since our health insurance will cover abortion starting next month due to the HHS Mandate. The Christian plan wants us to sign a testimony, most of which is fine, but it does have one bad line. Could we sign a document that says this:

“I believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin was alienated from God. Alienation can be removed only by accepting,* through faith alone*, God’s gift of salvation, which was made possible by Christ’s death.” (emphasis mine).

My priest is unavailable right now, and we need to make a decision quickly.

Thanks.

By faith *through grace *is what it says in the Bible…

But really, original sin is removed by baptism.

I would not be able to sign that statement. It is wildly inaccurate.

Well, if you want to get technical, they screwed up their grammar, and that gives you a possible loophole.

“Alienation can be removed only by accepting, through faith alone, God’s gift of salvation,”

This was intended to be read as

“Alienation can be removed only by accepting God’s gift of salvation through faith alone”

i.e. that you believe we are saved by faith alone.

However, “through faith alone” is instead modifying “accepting”, so it actually states that your acceptance is through faith, not that salvation is through faith. 😃

Do you accept based on faith alone that God gives you salvation? Or do you have other evidence?

If you look at the website and read how this works you will see that it is not exactly health insurance. Members contribute a certain amount into an escrow account each month. This is very much like a premium. But when a claim is made, that is when things gets interesting. The amount in the escrow account is paid out, but the amount can be adjusted downward depending on the needs of other members at the time. In other words they have no obligation to pay out any fixed amount. Here is the quote from their website:
Should the needs submitted for a particular month exceed the amount available to be shared for that month, needs will be prorated and each member will receive an equal percentage of their need. The remaining need will continue to be considered for sharing should funds be available in subsequent months.

Avoid this plan. Dispite its title, this is nothing but a market ploy to sell acceptance for a co-op plan that will not provide full coverage for your medical needs. You will do far better to wait for a Catholic plan.
For the meantime, I would contact one of the major insurance companies. …Aetna, Travelers, Prudential come to mind plus a host of others. All of the mainstream companies offer policies with abortion and contraception exceptions, and they all have highly competitive rates.
Beware of minor companies, many of them are flakes who will tell you anything to get your business-especially those who deal mainly on the internet, where they are un-regulated.

According to the HHS Mandate, ALL insurances have to cover abortion, sterilization, contraception starting August 1, 2012 except religious institutions which are given until January 1, 2013, so I don’t think there are any with exceptions after August 1. Besides, where I live, there are only two companies that are allowed: the one I have and one that is 3 times more expensive.

I know it’s not insurance. I don’t want insurance any more because of the HHS Mandate. I do recognize that they’re not required to pay out which is fine. None of my previous insurances have ever covered my treatments before (mostly NaPro stuff), so any cost share plan will be much more useful than insurance for me. The Catholic plan is a cost share plan as well, and from my understanding, they’re attaching themselves to one of the older Christian plans to avoid the mandate penalties for their members.

Sterilization and contraception, yes. And some borderline stuff like morning after pills. But not abortion in the traditional sense.

Even when I was Lutheran, I could not sign that.
Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire!
