This is a really interesting link. About a year ago I read Marco Polo’s account of his travels in the East. Throughout his book he frequently speaks about running across Christians, although Nestorians.

In this link and its sublinks, it talks about how Christian missionaries had arrived in China as early as 635 A.D. It even goes on to explain how Chinese governors persecuted the Christians in their territories. I am suprised by the claim that Christians were in Japan already in about 720 A.D.!!! I thought that the Jesuits who accompanied Portugal sailors in the 16th-17th centuries were the first Christian missionaries in Japan.

This article is wild!

Anyhow, have some fun. I was quite surprised! :yup:

Yes, I know; they were Nestorians. But even if they were Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses, it still would surprise me. But to have the Holy Scriptures translated into Chinese at such an early date! It just blows my mind away. And to think that there was a separate Christianity growing in China and India when the Fathers were still giving definition to the faith–that just makes me go wow. :yup:

In any case, are present day Nestorians still considered heretics by the Catholic Church?

Yes, they are still considered heretics. I agree, though, what an amazing piece of history. If only it were orthodox Christians! But that is one of the odd things about the history of missions in the far east. Catholics seem to have blown it on several occasions…as when the Jesuits and others were pulled out…
