This is at most a minor ethical dilemma, one I’m not obsessing about, but I’m curious what other forum denizens think. I posted this on a thread about “showing off,” but that thread has completely disappeared (don’t know why; there wasn’t anything controversial on it).
Anyway, what do y’all think about Christian/Catholic musicians playing virtuosic music, not in a church setting, but in a concert setting?
I play an instrument for which most of the solo literature is designed to show off the technical and musical skill of the performer. A lot of these pieces are in the “theme and variations” format, where the soloist states the theme and then takes the theme through a series of progressively more difficult variations, ending in a blaze of [something] and on a very high note. I’m working on one of these pieces for next fall’s community band season.
What do you think? Okay, or too much calling attention to self? If I make it through the last variation and coda, should I tebow in thanks?
If you’d like to see/hear what I’m talking about, here’s a link to a Youtube video of a pro playing the piece that I’m working on.
