I’ve been using Shorter Christian Prayer for a while now, and I’m fairly consistent using it daily for morning, evening and night prayer. I’m wondering what Christian Prayer has to offer that I’m not getting in the shorter version. I’ve been told that the hymns have their music included for one thing, which I would really appreciate. What are the other differences between the two versions?

The shorter one has only one week for Lent, Easter and Advent, which is then repeated. The other has the full prayers for those.

The shorter one has only the major feasts. The other has all solemnities, feasts, memorials, and optional memorials.

I used the shorter one for several years, but finally switched to get the greater variety.

Just having the complete sanctoral cycle alone would have made me choose CP over SCP. Add the full proper of seasons and selections from Daytime prayer and the Office of Readings and I think you have an overwhelming case for CP.
Buy the St Joseph’s Guide to Christian Prayer to help navigate there isn’t even much of an argument that CP is too difficult to use.
I’ve used all three sets (CP, SCP, and the 4 vol set) and I just find SCP is too truncated.

Well, I purchased Christian Prayer this past Monday, and I love it. I love the sections included for the saints, and the readings are not just scripture, but also hagiographic and patristic as well. Not to mention I now have the tunes for the hymns included, and a poetry section as well!

I have a only a single volume of LOTH, # IV weeks 18-34. That’s coming up soon. I just was not able to use it though, so I bought Shorter Christian Prayer, and that was more than a year ago. I think having started with SCP, and now wetting my feet in CP, that the LOTH will be much much more accessible now.

But you know the really good thing about SCP? I can slip it in my purse. 😃 I’m glad to have both versions.

I just got the Shorter Christian Prayer, but I do not know how to pray it, is there any guide out there? Or any advice you all can give to me. Thanks 🙂

I’m not sure if Shorter Christian Prayer comes with a guide. If you have ISBN 089942-408-2, then you have the same version I do. We’re in cycle week IV right now, Thursday which is found on page 304. Evening prayer is found on page 309. The antiphon can be repeated between each strophe of the psalm, but in private recitation it’s not necessary (I do often to keep my attention). When you come to “Canticle of Mary” on page 313, recite the antiphon with the Gospel Canticle found on the inside of the back cover.

Night prayer for today is found on the bottom of page 345, but as I understand it, you’ll want to make an examination of conscience immediately before night prayer. Here’s a good short version.

Tomorrow for morning prayer found on pg 314, you’ll use the antiphon with the invitatory Psalm 95 found on pg 22, or you can use one of the other Psalms found on pgs 24-26. You can continue straight on to Morning Prayer from there if you want. When you come to “Canticle of Zechariah” found on pg 319, recite the antiphon with the Gospel canticle found on the inside of the front cover.

Have patience getting started with it. It might take you a little while to get used to the flipping back and forth. Soon your book will be like mine and flip open exactly where you need it to be. 😉

The Ordinary found on pages 18-34 will explain everything. I’ve tried to put it as simply as I could since I know you probably want to get started NOW. 😃 If you’re anything like me, instruction books are best used as coasters. 😃

As I understand it, Morning Prayer is said at sunrise, and Evening is said at sunset. I don’t fuss myself too much with that though. I’ll say Morning Prayer anytime before noon, and Evening Prayer anytime after 5 PM. Night is bedtime. That’s just how I do it, it’s the best I can muster at this point.

I hope I didn’t over explain that. Have patience and just keep at it. It will get easier the more you do it.

Thank you so much BeeSweet… I will give it a try tonight. 🙂

God bless you!
